If you examine Sovereign objectively, it/the Reapers are actually a cookie cutter sci-fi villain. There's literally nothing special or different about them. However, subjectively speaking, this encounter is so freaking epic. I guess it's probably the voice acting and the background music. Execution is what takes a cookie cutter and makes it amazing.

So these things are like the god bug but are made of metal and way bigger in numbers with a logical based mind.

Sovereigns reveal was amazing, I was so upset that I had to deal with fuckn Harbinger for 2 games after. I hate harbingers spooky bad guy #452 voice. Sovereign felt like a reaper, robotic, apathetic, and filled with hubris. Harbinger sounds like a wojack with a voice changer and is all “GRRRR SHEPARD , THIS HURTS YOU MUAHAHAHAHA IN SO BAD”

Sovereign has the best voice of any villain I’ve ever seen. Give me goosebumps ever time I rewatch this. Hell, I turn up my volume and bass SPECIFICALLY for Sovereign. The sound mixing and lack of emotion pair BEAUTFIULLY.

Sovereign spilled everything out, because it knew that there was nothing that Shepard could do. Ending of ME3 was just Reaper indoctrination taking hold of him/her.

This interaction still stands out to me as one of the most profound interactions as a PC I’ve had. I can get not understanding an organic alien, their culture, their brain works in literally alien ways. I get it. This interaction. They scripted so incredibly. Sovereign succinctly conveys just how irrelevant and generally speaking, harmless organic beings are. The terminator franchises preps us for this, but this dialogue path, Soverign’s cold, methodical responses. I felt small, as a person holding a controller, imaging confronting an intelligence of this magnitude.

these 4 minutes made this franchise. i haven't had the same feeling in any game since. this scene is so out of left field and so crippling that it makes your entire adventure so far feel like a fart in the wind.

This still gives me chills, all these years later. Man... bioware writing was so strong back then...

Coming back to this talk after years (and Mass Effect 1 being the 3rd one I played after already finishing the series), makes me wish for a Redux of Mass Effect 3 (and maybe the whole series in some places). Make the reaper's motivation unknown, though not without guesses, just vague possibilities. Redo some of the plot points that didn't turn out as well as they seemed at the start, change up Mass Effect 3's war aspect a bit to be a bit more broad, and anything else anyone wants to add. The reapers feel like we shouldn't truly know where they came from or what they really wanted. We should have good ideas, but not be 100% sure, like it's vague and left to theories, though we have good guesses.

Best scene in all of the ME games combined. The plot twist and the sheer terror of the realization is absolutely bonkers.

I've played games for decades. I've seen some of the most insane and epic cut scenes and moments. I've heard some of the deepest and most thought provoking dialog. But to this very day the line "You exist because we allow it and you will end because we demand it. " Is the only line that gives me chills every time no matter how many times i hear it.

Sovereign was the only reaper that ever truly underestimated Shepard. Harbinger believed Shepard to be an anomaly in the cycle because of sovereigns failure and took every action he could to eliminate Shepard. From warning the other reapers, to sending the collectors after you, and in the final game harbinger himself try’s to keep you from reaching the crucible and only barely fails.

This is 15 years old, gosh this conversation send shivers every time. Now i gotta start playing it again!

0:36 when I first heard this on my first time playing the game my jaw actually dropped. I knew about the reapers going in to mass effect but I didn’t know anything about them other than they were robots trying to destroy all civilization every 10,000 years or something
