This is a good example of a capstan song. The sailors would sing it to keep in time as they pushed on the levers of the capstan, the device that winds up anchor chains as the ship is raising the anchor. Such songs were also sung while hauling in any cables (ropes) or chains. On modern ships, motors wind the capstans, but sailors can still sing for fun.

Dirige me, Redemptor magne, Peregrinus per hanc terram sterilem; infirmus sum, sed potens es; Tene me manu potenti tua: Panem caeli, pasce me donec non indigeam. Aperi fontem cristallum, unde sanator fluet amnis; Ignea columna nubis Duc me per omne iter: Fortis et protector meus esto adhuc robore meo. Iordanem calcans, iube timores anxios; Mors mortis, et interitus inferni, Terra me tutus in parte Canaan, Cantica laudis semper dabo tibi.

Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah, Pilgrim through this barren land. I am weak, but Thou art mighty; Hold me with Thy powerful hand. Bread of Heaven, Bread of Heaven, Feed me till I want no more; Feed me till I want no more. Open now the crystal fountain, Whence the healing stream doth flow; Let the fire and cloudy pillar Lead me all my journey through. Strong Deliverer, strong Deliverer, Be Thou still my Strength and Shield; Be Thou still my Strength and Shield. Lord, I trust Thy mighty power, Wondrous are Thy works of old; Thou deliver’st Thine from thralldom, Who for naught themselves had sold: Thou didst conquer, Thou didst conquer, Sin, and Satan and the grave, Sin, and Satan and the grave. When I tread the verge of Jordan, Bid my anxious fears subside; Death of deaths, and hell’s destruction, Land me safe on Canaan’s side. Songs of praises, songs of praises, I will ever give to Thee; I will ever give to Thee. Musing on my habitation, Musing on my heav’nly home, Fills my soul with holy longings: Come, my Jesus, quickly come; Vanity is all I see; Lord, I long to be with Thee! Lord, I long to be with Thee! They don’t write em like they used to…. So doctrinally rich, and not the same 3 word line over and over and over again.

Songs of praises, Songs of praises, I will ever give to Thee, I will ever give to Thee. (Last Chorus - Welsh) O, am aros, O, am aros, Yn Ei gariad ddyddiau f'oes, Yn Ei gariad ddyddiau f'oes! (Last Chorus - English) Oh, to stay, Oh, to stay, In his love all days of life, In his love all days of life!

As kids we would sing the chorus ' Bread from Evans's, tea from Jones's, beer from the Miners Arms'. Anyone caught would get a clip around the ear.

Love this song and lee inglebys part of it in master and commander, such a very true voice, this version sounds like a strong element of a Welsh voice choir . Artist is Robert Shaw but also another Robert Shaw from Jaws sung a parody he actually has a fantastic vocal range as played when out to sea in the film.
