1:21. That looks like Olympic in the background behind the pier building
@DSGNflorian9 ай бұрын
More probably one of the "Big Four". The two funnels briefly visible certainly could be White Star livery but seem too low and small to be Olympic's. Aquitania and Olympic were about the same size and their funnel height was also about the same. As the camera vantage point is from the Aquitania's upper decks, Olympic's funnels would rise above the pier sheds to a much higher level.

@@DSGNflorianlooking at it closer it might actually be a Big Four ship

If it was a big four ship it would’ve been Adriatic, Cedric, Or Baltic, those 3 reached the 30s.

Thanks for reposting. This was a favourite video which I used to look at frequently. The sound makes it appear more like a live TV broadcast of 30 years later. The only thing that annoys me is I've still not identified the tune played in the middle!

Aquitania's whistles were identical to the ones used by the White Star Olympic Class Liners (Olympic, Titanic, and Britannic).
@buzzygaming7667 Жыл бұрын
apparently they're exactly a note deeper so not really, you can hear it in the video of olympic
@1987VCRProductions Жыл бұрын
@@buzzygaming7667They sound very similar and I’d read that they were identical but I could be wrong. There’s a clearer recording of Olympic’s whistles from when she was filmed arriving in New York after having sunk the Nantucket Light Ship and they sound almost indentical to these on Aquitania. A recording of the triple bell whistles from Mauretania sound very close to Olympic’s as well.
@Your_Uncle_is_watching Жыл бұрын
@@1987VCRProductionsThey were ordered a note deeper, though steam would pitch it up either way. So I wouldn't say 'identical' rather heavily similar is the word.
@railsrust10 ай бұрын
@@Your_Uncle_is_watching The molds were the same. Whistle manufacturers were not in the market for redesigning whistles for every customer. If they wanted to do that, they could just make their own. Any difference between the sound of any of these whistles were from slight differences in how the castings came out, how much wear the whistles had, and the recording equipment used. There was also a bit of difference based on how far the recording was taken from the whistle.

Thank you so much for reposting the brilliant video of RMS Aquitania departing from New York in 1930. It is a gorgeous representation of how New York Harbour looked at the time and of the bustling activity around departures of the great transatlantic ocean liners of the day. As one of the most beautiful ocean liners ever built and a personal favourite, this video was very much missed. Many thanks for sharing this and greetings from near Southampton, England!
