What I got from it is they were happy before she was born. Once she was born she came between them. So ending is sort of a black irony. I love the way Cheever makes you wonder about his intentions.

The Father Thing. In grade school the school librarian read this to our little class of seven-year-olds. What was he thinking lol. That story has haunted me for decades 😃
