The balloons are inflated because they contain air at a pressure greater than 1 atmosphere, when you pierce the red balloon air escapes until the air pressure inside the balloon is 1 atmosphere, because air has a mass, and the yellow balloon has more air in it, the yellow balloon is heavier and so it goes down and forces the red balloon up. I think you are teaching Ideal Gas Laws.
