I used to live on Palomar as a kid. Went to the school down the street from this observatory. As a local, we did incredible things at this place. School had a field trip to the 200in telescope to watch the cleaning of the lens which they did once every 1-2 years. One time on Christmas they let us locals into the telescope at night, we were all drinking cider and watching stars and planets with the astronomers. A buddy of mine at schools dad worked as an astronomer there. I had a sleep over at his house one night and his dad took us to the smaller 60in telescope in the middle of the night and we watched a comet. I was very young, I don't remember the comets name but he did say I would be an old man by the time it was visible again. Pretty amazing childhood looking back on it. I'm an adult now, living in the city of San Diego. I need to go back up there and spark some memories. I miss the place.

@@TinCanTwosome it was good times for sure. do you know if the school is still there? it would have been on the left had side of the road right before you enter the observatory area. when we had our school field trip we would just walk there. anyway, I ran into a guy at work today who goes up the mountain from time to time for his job and he seemed to think they shut the school down. made me a little sad to hear that. not sure if it's true though.
