Just lost my uncle Tommy Paterson who was a guardsman and fought at tumbledown. Learned at his funeral that he was nominated for the British Empire Medal for carrying his comrade off the battlefield through a mine field. Of course he never mentioned this to me as he like all of you guys was too humble.

Not directly, the scots guards attack on tumbledown was the first phase of a brigade attack. Right behind the scots guards were the gurkha's who had mount William as their objective and behind them the Welsh guards who had sapper hill as theirs

Gus came to see me in my younger years when I spent time in prison. I was in a cycle of homelessness, addiction, crime, sometimes in hostels, and it consumed a decade or more of my life. My last sentence I had 2.5 years and was the longest I had done. I had time to think and try to change my patterns and lifestyle and read a bit about Buddhism. Then Gus came in to see me after I requested to talk to someone. We had a few sessions with a handful of other guys and did some meditation mixed with talking. He was the most down to earth guy I ever knew but from what I remember the prison were making it difficult for us to allocate an area for our sessions and guards or staff to get us from different wings and to watch over us and it became more difficult each time. They have employees full time for chaplains of all other beliefs/religions/faiths but nit buddhism. There was a chapel for christians and other equivalent rooms for other religions like myslim, islam and so on. But for us somebody had to voluntarily travel across country to try to accomodate out little group. Then I got transferred to Parc Prison in Bridgend and it got worse. A month or 2 went by and Gus had found his way to me and came in. We had a few group sessions then it got increassingly difficult and I remember Gus coming to see me alone on my wing. He said it might be his last visit and asked if he could help in any way. I was struggling to find books and material to teach me more. I had a few books from our group sessions but the library in there had nothing on Buddhism. I wanted to learn more about the history of Buddhism itself. Next time he came was his last visit and he brought me a huge book called The Encyclopedia of Buddhism and im sure it was from his own collection. I was sad to see him go but he changed my way of seeing things and really had a massive impact on my mental health and thought patterns. He was so down to earth and inspiring. I got out 12 years ago and I will admit I am not a full on practicioner of Buddhism but it has stuck with me every day. It is a part of my life. I havent been arrested or back to prison since and Gus is a major part of that. I am housed, in a relationship, had my ups and downs but am happy overall. Deep In the book was a cut out of an old newspaper clipping of who I believe is his brother maybe. I kept it safe all this time and wanted to give it back someday. Anyway, I cant thank Gus enough. He told me what I needed to hear and it changed my life. I hope he is well and OK. Ben

This is why people do me head in about Maggie Thatcher saying she won the war, Admiral Sir Henry Leach is the one who pushed for this campaign and he had to do it with ships which were about to be scrapped, even now we have soldiers and sailors and probably airmen on the streets, while immigrants are being put in hotels, disgusting

I am thinking of going back down again at sometime. Was there for the 25th and the islanders were just terrific. Actually the memories i made on that trip helped me in so many ways. I hadnt really realised but i left parts of myself stuck back in 1982 and when I revisited some of the locations that had such vivid memories by going again and making new ones it broke the connection for me and allowed me to move on and put certain things behind me. If i was to go again i am sure it will be with yet again a different perspective
