Hi Shelley. Thank you so much for doing this video. As a traditionally published author and writer, I hate what AI has already done to the literary community. I think it's about time for people to stop acting like we have to accept it and move on. I plan on doing an AI video on my channel in the near future. You've done a great job pointing out many of the problems we face.

People who pumped out 2-3 books in a day for amazon to actually put that limit are crazies! I am an indie author and I have been struggling to write maybe because I am drained but using AI to finish a 500 page novel is shady

What in the actual what?! So you're telling me that they don't wanna handle too many words?? Damn me then. I hate skimming over things! At one point I was reading a book and accidentally skipped a page when things did co-relate to what i was reading. You know what I did? I went back, re-read the page I was on and continued. Like- The more I see the bad side of BookTok the more I feel happy that I am just reading whatever I know will make me happy.

So I’m kind of a b word and I clicked on this thinking you’d be obnoxious. Don’t ask me why, I don’t know. Anyway, once you recommended Leigh Bardugo I was sold.

I understand where you're coming from with the 'AI can help you proof read'-take, but I do disagree on some level. Just like you said earlier: yes, it might help, but it will at the same time steal your work, helping others who want to copy your style to cheat later. I also find it quite useless when it comes to proof reading. It misses obvious mistakes that a human would catch because it doesn't make sense in the context. Since AI doesn't understand text (AI is not intelligent in that way, which is the reason why it still puts six fingers on human hands and dumb stuff like that) it might not see if you misspell the word "reign" as "rein" for example. I think the reason why there are so many spelling- and grammar errors even in traditionally published books nowadays is AI. Even they use it to proof read and poor quality books ends up being the result.

As an indie author myself, I refuse to use AI because I stand in solidarity with my fellow creatives. Just because services are expensive and putting out a book is hard doesn’t mean I get a free pass to exploit other people’s work like that. I feel like I sound like such a boomer but indie authors who use/lean on AI to produce their books need to suck it up and do their own work 😭 obviously there’s nuance to this but I’m just salty lmaooo

We’ve been having AI to edit since Clippy in Microsoft so I’m all for that. I do not agree with Ai writing entire books no but feel it can’t be stopped if it does get done I believe a huge label should be put on the work and it should be heavily revised for plagiarism.

What we all need to remember is AI is horrible for the environment. The use of AI should be limited until they can find an eco-friendly way to use it.

What about revising a human draft and polish the writing specially for a person not good with metaphor and description. Does that also cheapen the art?
@etherealfan
@etherealfan 3 күн бұрын
It cheapens the art and it still steals from real artists. It's not just about the art and stealing from artists. Generative ai isn't sustainable and extremely harmful to the environment and all living creatures.

@ you are too radical here. My texts and ideas are still there and you tell me it cheapens the art and steals from real artists. So my texts I wrote that the ai just polish a bit are from the artists? I didn’t know what I have in my brain belongs to the real artists. 😅
@etherealfan
@etherealfan 3 күн бұрын
@Paikoun22 Yeah because the AI is going to copy the cadence and structure of real artists' sentences and prose when they edit your draft. Do you also get your ideas from ai or other artists? This usually goes hand in hand from people I know who use AI to edit.

People are too lazy and vain to learn skills but they want the clout and prestige of being an artist and making something. They also want money. People who use generative ai are just individualism and moral depravity and capitalism personified.

I honestly think the girl complaining about there being too many words on the page is a bit taken out of context. I think she's talking about how the words are so small and crammed together. I can actually understand what she's saying. It throws me off if the words are super close together.

Not only is most AI just straight up theft, the environmental impact is so severe (carbon emissions, water consumption, and toxic waste) ! especially in our earth that is literally burning down and freezing solid simultaneously lol NO! also as other people have said, the community that used to be built for distributing zines, indie books, and word of mouth recommendations is being systematically broken down to lift up individualism instead!

I'm Anti-AI to write books. People can either write their book with imagination or not. It's a system of computers stealing from places. Now, I realize it's not going anywhere but it's meant to be a tool. Keep schedules. Help with calendars. Grocery lists. Google things. Not to create. It's not for creating books or art. That's where it's bad. It takes light off people who genuinely create their work themselves. It's not real art or actually created because it's a person clicking a button to reproduce stolen work slightly different. Fable Summaries had negative consequences to their AI use, it was trained on racist and biased materials. I think that people need to disclose this so we can avoid it. So we can make conscious decisions about what we consume or don't. I do say it cheapens the beauty of art.

AI is plagiarism laundering. In addition, if they use AI's spit to create a cover, or a logo, or anything they would like to trademark and/or copyright, they can't.

This is, imo, the biggest reason people should avoid using generative ai for their works. Every single generative ai model is trained on existing media scraped from the internet- including genuine CP!! -so not only is it bad from a moral/environmental standpoint considering all of the water/energy it uses, but, just as you pointed out, it’s just not copyrightable because it uses already copyrighted works to give you the stuff you were too lazy to create yourself.

I feel like telling people that they can/should rely on Ai for stuff they used to look to community for, is trying to separate everyone. People are out here telling authors they can use AI covers because it's 'unfair' they have to pay artists if they want a nice cover. It's telling people it's ok to take advantage of people by proxy instead of form relationships with people who want to work together. I know one of my fav indy writers has a friend that does all her covers and reading lists that help edit. That's what we always did and now AI bros are trying to tell us that's a hassle.

when it comes to generative ai, a nonsentient nonintelligent software generating a “book” by reorganizing words and plots and themes from already existing prior content, my thoughts are basically this quote I saw on tumblr that just sums it up 100%: “Why should I bother to read what you-” (the author) “-didn’t bother to write?” like, idc idc, the worst written wattpad fanfic by a 12 year old riddled with spelling and grammar mistakes and full of tropes, is still millions of times more valuable and valid and better than a fully published ai “book.” plus real individual human authors aren’t burning the world with their ecologically disastrous servers to create unimaginative derivative drivel 😌 (only billionaires do ~ that ~ but that’s another convo lol) harsh, maybe, but also accurate. but truly idc if it is harsh, because generative ai by definition cannot write, it’s not a robot friend, it’s an ecologically harmful capitalist hellscape and we hates it precious. Automation is supposed to ease the hellscape to allow humans time to be humans, not push humanity out of the very fields being human is vital in, like art and writing etc, and into more of a hellscape ✨
