Im in 5b, wisconsin, and i just started my pepper plants yesterday, along with onions, celery, and some broccoli and cauliflower. I typically wait until February 14 but i needed a few more weeks of growing with hot peppers, so im experimenting this year with early starts. Fingers crossed. Tomatoes i will start around February 14 to 20. Hapoy growing all. 🌱

So if I cut the limb that close to the trunk it will not grow back?

That limb will not. But that doesn’t mean that other small limbs won’t sprout nearby. Sometimes that happens. But the limb you remove in this manner will not grow back.

Where did you get the edger from? Thanks in advance.
@joegardenerTV
@joegardenerTV 25 күн бұрын
You should be able to find this or a similar style at Home Depot or Lowe’s. The two brands that both have a good edger like this is Corona and Fiskars. If you can find either of those, they are good. But even if not, there should be a flat bladed edger on a long handle. I’ve used those for years as well. Hope that helps. 👍

Could you share or list what the other items are that you have, like the green stuff you used to tie stems with? This looks ideal for men since they wear belts, but I'm when I garden I don't have a belt on me, just comfy shorts. How would women wear it? What is the thickness of the belt you would need to purchase so it attaches?

Hi, Helen. There is now a list of those items with links on where to purchase. Also, you don't have to wear a belt to use the sheath. It has a fold over clip as mentioned in the video description which allows it to be worn without a belt. You can also learn more about its design at the website linked in the video description - joegardener.com/ultimate-gardening-sheath/. Thanks for your interest! I hope you will give it a try.

My tomatoes were diagnosed at a lab with CMM Bacterial Canker. I am planning for next spring. So Far on the to do list: Pull up all plants and dispose of (done)- pull up all weeds in proximity of a plant - spray the ground cover (I use a large plastic cover with 15 inch holes for the plants) - spray the fence - soak the cages, stakes, tools , cups and trays- spray the inside of the greenhouses - look for certified pathogen-free seeds and soak seeds w bleach solution - treat seedlings with streptomycin before transplant - treat with copper after transplant. (Last season I sprayed with peroxide and mancozeb but it did not help much Questions: 1) Is there an effective ground-soak I can use in the fall that will kill it in the soil? 2) Does peroxide kill cmm in the soil? 3) If not, can I spray the soil surface with a heavily diluted bleach solution in the fall and have the soil recover by spring? 4) How about one of those 'friendly bacteria' bio fungicides like "Revitalize" ? They do recommend it for ground soak but not sure if its effective tor CMM I have a pepper garden next to the tomato garden. Both are about 1,500 sq feet but are only 5 feet from each other - so close that I'm not sure switching them will help???
@joegardenerTV
@joegardenerTV 2 ай бұрын
My understanding is that bacterial canker develops in and from leaf debris at the soil level and easily overwinters. I’ve never tried to kill off the pathogens in any way so I don’t know if that would be effective and what you would even use. My approach is crop rotation and not plant any plants from that family in that part of your garden for four years. Although that’s the slow approach hopefully you have alternative areas that have not had tomatoes, peppers, eggplant or potatoes growing in those same beds. There may be soil treatments but I am not aware of any. It sounds like you’ve done your homework though. Good luck! If you end up finding something that works, I’d love to hear about it.

Awesome idea with the string trimmer! How can I keep the chopped leaves from blowing around the yard after I put them down as mulch? Could I cover them with cardboard or something?
@joegardenerTV
@joegardenerTV 2 ай бұрын
Thanks. I find that the chopped leaves stay in place better than whole leaves. The smaller pieces tend to mat together better, but it’s important that you have a layer that is thick enough so they all have a chance to sort of interlock. That’s not the ideal word but it’s the best one I can think of to explain why a layer that is very thin won’t do as well for staying in place. The whole leaves are like big sails on the ground and catch wind easier.

For three years now, I’m still picking numerous plastic, glass, metal, and trash bits out of multiple batches of my local OMRI Listed bulk compost. Same for an organic bagged product from a common brand. As you emphasized, we have to inspect it all ourselves evidently. There is nothing organic, or even remotely acceptable, about synthetic trash.

Straw has seeds, don’t use it, use shredded leaves
@joegardenerTV
@joegardenerTV 3 ай бұрын
While some straw bales include seeds that often sprout, it’s easy to remove them once they do. My favorite mulch is still shredded leaves, but in consideration to the “leave the leaves” movement, I am using less shredded leaves as I consider the best alternative. For now that is straw.

WHAT, Joe, IS "high quality topsoil"???? If I knew THAT, would I still be seeking advice at the fundamental level??? Please, explain it to me like the last successful crop I planted, cultivated, & harvested was radishes, at age 7 -- because it was. No! I also, threw wildflower seeds into my parent's landscaped yard, feeling adolescent angst + need for WILDflowers!!!
@joegardenerTV
@joegardenerTV 3 ай бұрын
Topsoil does not have a true standard definition. So here’s what iI nconsider high-quality topsoil to be: soil-like in appearance. NO recognizable ingredients. Rich dark in color and earthy smell. No sour or off-putting odor. When you squeeze a handful it should bind together. It when you run your fingers through it, it should break apart.

@joegardenerTV
@joegardenerTV 3 ай бұрын
I’ve seen very small amounts of the strands of the large cubic yard bags that hold the product sometimes but they are few and easily removed by hand. Understandable considering the loading process. But there is no ingredient in soil3 that contains plastic. As for the clumps, that occasionally can happen when moisture gets into the bag-also not common at the time of purchase because the bags are loaded loose and then closed tightly to prevent water getting into the product. However, I have seen times where bags later opened after delivery can form some clumps if water gets to them. But that’s not anything unique to Soil3.

Thank you for the information. Our local community garden has a huge bin that gets delivered all the time from our green waste company now I’m wondering what’s in it because I used it for the first time this year. I also made some of my own but not enough and I’m trying to figure out how to do this again without millions of bugs, which was pretty gross, or is that normal? I had millipedes and beetles everywhere.
@joegardenerTV
@joegardenerTV 3 ай бұрын
It’s hard to know what’s in it unless the person/people can specify what was added. Otherwise there is no way to know. That’s the challenge with using compost you don’t make. I get it! The big part is normal though so do t worry about that. 👍

i have an 18 foot by 6 foot balcony on the second floor of a london apartment block, i grow 50 or 60 sunflowers a year and let the bees have them, and the squirrels take care of the seeds quite efficiently. i have a wormery of european red wiggler worms who have taken over all the pots, and the soil condition is off the chart amazing. i've been looking for ways to overwinter the bees so the plant stalk trick was very helpful, thank you. with any leftover plants i might make a small hugelculture pile in the corner for the insects. i recycle everything on the balcony, it goes into the wormeries or as mulch, and i just can't get over the soil quality because of it.
