I just bought this identical knife and sheath (also bought the dangler). have had it about a week, haven't used it yet. I was also amazed by the quality for the price point, great company! I hope to take it into the field this summer👍👍😎 thx bro !

Thank you! You’ll find that it’s a workhorse. And, get some Danish oil for the birch handles. It turns them a beautiful honey brown and makes the grain pop.

Great review and a fantastic knife. As much as I love and respect Ray Mears and his abilities as a woodsman, his Woodlore knife is absurdly over priced and overhyped. His skills far outweigh his knife. I’m pretty sure he’d have just as good results with this Casstrom, or a Mora classic. This is just a beautiful, well designed and very capable knife.
@thewanderingheathen2 жыл бұрын
I completely agree. When I first learned of Ray, of course I obsessed about the woodlore knife. Here’s a little secret: A. Wright & Sons makes an almost identical knife to the current Ray Mears knife. The handles aren’t contoured. That’s about the only difference. That, and it retails for about $200. But, I think I’ve found my new favorite knife.

@@thewanderingheathen Casström's Lars Fält knife is basically a Woodlore.
@thewanderingheathen2 жыл бұрын
@@Bushprowler if I’m not wrong, the Casström came before the woodlore, and Ray copied a lot of the designs… however, I can’t be 100%
@Bushprowler2 жыл бұрын
@@thewanderingheathen no problem, you're 100% wrong. The original Woodlore dates back to the 80s/early 90s and was a design collaboration between knifemaker Alan Wood and Ray. Lars founded the Swedish Armed Forces Survival School and collaborated with swedish knifemaker Kaj Embretsen in the early 90s to design a knife for said unit. Lars' first 'signature' was more akin to a Fällkniven F1 with a full flat grind and was basically the F1's precedessor before it was produced by Linder, Germany. Lars' current Casström knife is basically indentical to the Woodlore pattern and the first prototype was made in 2017. Considering that Lars is a regular teacher on Ray's courses he's probably well accustomed to the design and choose this pattern as his Casström signature knife.
@thewanderingheathen2 жыл бұрын
@@Bushprowler I consider myself educated. I did read Ray’s book, “My Outdoor Life” and remember him talking about his design, and the Wilkinson Sword knife, but I didn’t realize he’d come up with the design himself. Thanks for clearing it up!

A lot of channels don’t explain in detail how to make feather sticks properly. The thinner the shaving, the better chance of catching a spark and igniting

yeah, the Companion, Robust, and Garberg are pretty much unbeatable. but this seems to be a decent Chinese product.
@thewanderingheathen2 жыл бұрын
It’s decent, but the handle could be more ergonomic. If it were a bit wider it would feel much better in the hand.
