I do own one of these cartridges but it doesn't include super mario kart which is a bit shady

Just bought one in great shape this year. I have Arch on it and it is such a nice laptop. Can't to male upgrades! And what a nice keyboard!

I think the T420 is still usable as a basic laptop in 2024, let alone 2022. Mine is an ex-business i7 and I've upgraded it over several years with more RAM, an SSD (absolutely essential) and used the original spinner in an ultrabay tray. It now has a Duracell-branded 9-cell battery and a USB 3 upgrade in the Expresscard slot as well, all costing very little money. All this makes it still useful for office tasks, browsing, emails, slide shows, zooming etc, but probably not recent games. It's not my daily driver (that's a nicely specced desktop) but does get used occasionally even with my Apple MacBook Pro to hand. It's set up with Windows 11 but I may revert to Windows 10 as this appears to be the sweet spot. So well built as well - screen still good, no creaks or cracks in the case, very nice keyboard, brilliant trackpoint (why is this going out of fashion) and all ports work even after 13 years. Until recently I had a T420 i5 which is now used by a friend as their daily driver, and in comparison there is very little difference in speed, and the i5 runs cooler so is probably the one to go for. The high-res 1600x900 screen is worth looking out for. Mine has the nVidia graphics option but in practice I haven't found a use for it. I have used later Thinkpads. They work well but don't appears so well made.

Upgrade to an SSD, install a good Linux distro, and that T420 will be a workhorse.

Have one in 2024, its really good, just get an ssd an 8 gig of dual channel ram. fast enough to run basic tasks and old school gaming, my only complaint with t420 is its weight, its very bulky and it also throttles without the battery for some reason.

I am using one of them in 2024. i5, 12Gb RAM and 256 SSD. W10 as SO. It works fine for all the task I need to do.

Im running Linux Mint OS. I just upgraded my T420 to a 1 TB ssd, and I was playing 8 videos in 8 browser tabs simultaneously with no lag in the system! I stopped there and checked the ram and cpu core usage. 4gb of ram and about .25 or less of each core. I bought a Crucial MX500 1TB 3D NAND SATA 2.5-inch 7mm (with 9.5mm adapter) Internal SSD It's the best upgrade I have done.

We had a bunch of these donated to us and after having a Quake III LAN party we each carried two of them up to the pedestrian crossing over the highway and hurled them at cars below 😂 eight eMacs just raining from the sky. In regards to adding storage: The secondary network card slot (next to the bottom RAM slot) also takes mSATA SSDs, so if you want extra storage without giving up the DVD drive you can use that for SSD storage and leave the 2.5" bay for spinning rust.

Yes, it's a great laptop. Although USB3 would be nice. I've two of them, one for use, one for a spare. Never use games. Express USB3 cards just do not fit, far far too tight in the machine

Great vid...that was and still is a great machine. As much as I love new tech and buying the latest greatest...that machine could do everything I actually do on a computer and I use one daily for work...both home office and in the field. Email...videos...conference calls...MS office...shopping...research...and a bunch of cloud based crap...no problem on that machine. As I type on a 2k Mac :/

What's the specs of your t420 gpu dedicated or integrated? I upgraded mine to i7 2670QM here in Pakistan i found this processor for 7$ also i found that integrated intel hd 3000 doesn't work on windows 10 buts runs flawless on windows 8.1

The speaker output was unfortunately proprietary and the internal sound was nearly as good. However, audio out to good quality powered speakers can give excellent results because the audio DAC chip OUT was superb at the design stage by Sir Jonathan Ive and when Apple lost interest in audio excellence along with other manufacturers Ive worked with HK and others as a side project. He likes music and was brought up among Welsh choral societies.

I have just discovered your site and look forward to viewing other content. My T420 has 8GB RAM, a good quality 480GB SSD and boots to fully ready in 9 seconds. I modded it with ease after rebuilding a T400 and T500, so I was quite competent when tackling the T420 and repair/upgrade neighbours' laptops as a useful pension boost. Most of the client machines are far younger than my T-team but far less well made and do not beat the speeds in standard tasks of my T420 with Intel I5 and Nvidia switchable graphics. Needless to say, the newer stuff (even at fancy prices) have tiring and tiresome keyboards and get rather warm because of the slim fad and, in the case of HPs, downright poor internals and cheap capacitors as well as lousy access. At least the better makes still allow RAM expansion and we are now past the ultra-slim, minimal port phase in performance laptops by Dell Group, ASUS, Acer and some new Fijitsus. Apple is also getting the message in its bigger screen machines, even allowing RAM increase. Sadly, Lenovo now makes too wide a range and lack direction but if they made something like the T420 with the option of a 'retro' keyboard, modern ports and optical/ultra-bay swappable the education market worldwide would order millions of them. Optical (especially high density) is by no means obsolete in education and medical use and why do you say "INFAMOUS" ThinkLight? Backlit keyboards do not illuminate the whole working area while a slightly modified ThinkLight does.

It would have helped you a lot to use FireWire Target Disk Mode, so you don't have to take everything apart.

I've been using my T420 as my daily since 2016 when i bought it used. Still runs fine, recently upgraded to 16 GB Ram. Next is i7 and SSD

i had to use this in high school in 2009-2013 and these were the worst computers in school

I just bought a 2002 eMac myself recently! I've been meaning to burn an install disc to wipe it, but haven't gotten around to it yet. I love to see more people enjoying the education machines from yesteryear

I have T420 with 16GB RAM, and 2 SSDs with total 1.5TB. Total beast. The only bottleneck is the 2nd gen Intel CPU. Which can be tweaked into gen 3 i7 when installing Coreboot BIOS. I wish they would produce laptops as upgradeable as T420 these days.

T420 is a great laptop which lasted me 10yrs of good service. Then started getting really really slow and lagging, then crashing. I finally had to buy a new laptop. Its a great laptop workhorse, i upgraded mine to 16gb ram & ssd. But not good enough now for 2023. Get something else
