I know this video is very old but I would go to you if I lived near! I look like the one on @2:07. I have a scar that goes around the bellybutton then down. Like the woman but a little different because of an ovary removal years ago.

No, the scar will always be there, so the change from the tummy tuck has to be worth the scar. Scars take over a year to mature (see my scar page - google my name and scar care). Most look good, some don't, and some get revised (~2%). Revisions (cutting out the scar and re-sewing it) tend to heal better, as there is no longer the same tension as when the tummy tuck was first done. Some patients camouflage the scar with a tattoo, but don't do this till the redness is gone (1-2 years.) Dr.B

Dear bcortez21, Congratulations on your new child! Pain after surgery is variable: it depends on the surgeon's techniques and the patient's appreciation of pain. If you thought a c-section wasn't that bad, I would predict you would also think an abdominoplasty performed with my techniques wouldn't hurt that much. Dr.B

I always try to make them as low as possible, but there are limits. Removing skin from the umbo down to the pubis, there will be a lot of tension in the central abdomen. The skin from the umbo to the ribcage is undermined (free from attachments), and is then pulled down and swen to the lower incision - but it still tries to snap back and thus lifts the scar. It is a bit of a trade off: how tight to make the abdomen vs low scar. Visit a board certified PS and discuss your concerns / goals.

@MistressChococat - She also had a breast reduction at the time of the tummy tuck. A breast reduction automaticlly creates a breast lift. A tummy tuck does not create a breast lift (although it might slightly pull down the inframammary fold position, which "raises" the relative nipple position - but this effect is minimal.) Dr.B

This is a very fascinating and informative video. I had no idea how tummy tucks really work, so showing the before/after photos as well as adding vectors to show excision, etc. lines was really helpful. Thank you for posting these videos! So helpful.

Could answer something for me? I want a tummy tuck and was wondering what the possibility was that I could have the incision as low as it can go. Right above the pubic bone. I do not have too much skin that needs to be removed. What is the best case scenario that someone could have the incision really low. What makes the difference in where and how low the incision is made? Im not sure you will understand what I am trying to say but I really hope so. This is my main concern

Dear Dmoo, You should choose the procedure that affects the area that bothers you the most. The tummy tuck has the greatest impact on the abdomen, but occasionally affects breast appearance. If your abdomen is protuberant and then becomes flat, it may make your breasts look bigger based on frame of reference. Several patients have commented on this occurance. Good luck! Dr.B

No. Once you make an incision, there will always be a scar. For this reason, it is good to decide exactly where you are willing to have a scar (that can be hidden by your clothing), and if it is worth the trade. ie: Is the result of the tummy tuck worth the scar? It is often straightforward if there are existing stretchmarks or c-section scars, but it is a choice the patient has to make.
