I looked forward to your reaction to the "captured" Englishman scene, one of my favorite moments in the series. I love your reactions. You're one of the few reactors who help me feel long-dormant feelings that warm my soul.

The series was based on the 1992 book of the same name by Stephen E. Ambrose which was itself based almost entirely on interviews with the E (Easy) Company veterans themselves. All of the individuals portrayed were very real people and this is a mostly very accurate account of events. There are of course some mistakes, only a couple of them glaring, and some things that had to be modified to accommodate a TV series. For example, this and many other episodes suffer from time crunch and give the appearance of events happening much closer together than in actuality. The matter of the Winters court-martial and Sobel being reassigned was actually resolved several months before the jump. Also, many have suspected it was actually Colonel Sink who secretly orchestrated the NCO mutiny in order to get rid of Sobel because the latter couldn't easily be reassigned while the court-martial proceedings were ongoing (perhaps also hinting at Sobel's actual motivation). Obviously we'll never know for sure, but the Sergeant who was demoted had his rank restored shortly thereafter and the one who was transferred out of the regiment was actually transferred to the Army Pathfinders (those who jumped ahead of the main body of paratroopers to mark the landing zones with radio beacons).

Well Kate, gotta say the experience with you definitely is an order of magnitude better than so many others out there. Hate that it's taken this long to find you, but look forward to more reactions as we go. You are one Classy Lady. That rotary cannon was an original style Gatling gun. The military uses something like it even to this day. Fewer barrels, much higher rate of fire and power.

Great reaction! I think it was Carwood Lipton who said that seeing the invasion fleet of Operation Neptune gave him a sense of just how large this invasion really was. Over 7000 ships and boats, over 1800 warships included. There was warships from nations conquered by Germany like France, The Netherlands, Norway, and even the Polish Navy

Subscriber here 🙂 NNNOOOOOO!!!! I thought you were Movie Date with Kate??? I hope you intersperse movies with BOB, otherwise it's just going to be endless weeks of content that's been done to death. Check out Diegesis for a great format to appeal to a wide range of audiences. Another chanel I used to subscribe to used to watch a couple of different movies every week and then started with BOB, and that's all there was for weeks on end. I ended up unsubscribing.

After this series watch "The Pacific". It is basically the same as Band of Brothers but set in the Pacific theatre of operations of WWII.

Look up the author Stephen E. Ambrose. He is an author who wrote many books about soldiers and their experiences in combat. He used letters from soldiers to their families, first hand accounts from soldiers and the stories told to soldier's families for the material in his books. He is regarded as one of the most historically accurate war authors who never actually saw war. His books had a lot to do with the production of this series. His accounts from still living soldiers and the letters from soldiers to their families gave this series an authenticity many Veterans commented on.

David Schwimmer did a brilliant job as an actor in this episode. You see him make his entry as hopelessly typecast "Ross" and within 15 seconds he is Capt Sobel and remains so for the rest of the time.

These actors are portraying real soldiers who served honorably in wartime. As a general rule, anyone portrayed in a negative light was probably not as bad in real life as they are portrayed for dramatic purposes. By the same token men portrayed as saints are probably not perfect flawless heroes either. Even when Hollywood tries to be historically accurate, they can't resist following storytelling tropes. This is as close as anyone has ever come to an accurate portrayal of the wartime exploits of an individual Company. but it is not perfectly accurate history.

I found David Schwimmer’s portrayal of Sobel so interesting. He did prepare the company well but apparently was petty enough to warrant reassignment. A good job by an actor to engender the animus of the audience the entire episode then actually evoke sympathy in the one scene where he is reassigned only to throw that away by disregarding Winters’ salute.

One thing about them looking into the camera: I don't read that so much as them breaking the fourth wall (which implies a take to the audience), rather I see it as a thousand yard stare (i.e. they aren't looking at anything in particular, but the camera happens to be looking right into their eyes). If that was the intent, it's an interesting subversion of the fourth wall norm.

Hello there I just discovered your channel and I'm loving it. Band of Brothers is the best movie film or series of all time. But PLEASE PLEASE after you seen all 10 episodes watch the documentary on the man of Bob. It's calleded " We stand alone together the man of easy company:Band of brothers. It's even better then the Bob show. Just to let you know that every episode gets harder and harder as you go along . Only good one is episode 10. Witch is the ending.

Great reaction Kate like always, my absulote favourite series. love it! Band of Brothers is more than just a WWII drama; it’s a poignant reminder of the realities of war. It underscores the importance of remembering WWII, not just as a historical event, but as a testament to human resilience and solidarity in the face of adversity. The series brings to life the experiences of the soldiers, their camaraderie, and their sacrifices, making this important history tangible for every generation, a chance to contemplate the profound lessons of WWII - the cost of freedom, the perils of intolerance, and the value of unity. It serves as a powerful tool for education and remembrance, ensuring that the stories of WWII soldiers continue to resonate today and for generations to come. If you read the book the men of Easy did credit Sobel with making them tough and ready for combat. They were very comfortable at night and very physically fit. They did not think he would have been a good combat leader but they do give him the credit for the training toughness. Btw dont forget your tissues on future episodes. Keep up the good work.

First time watching your channel. Terrific reaction -- defined of course by how much you picked up on, and so much you did not miss from this amazing series that, yes, is only getting started and we are excited for you to watch in its entirety. Your being British I was hoping you would get a kick out of the old man on the bicycle scene and the line he says, "You did it Yanks, You captured me." Being American, I always get the same emotion from that warm little interaction in that we are friendly 'sibling' nations, England and the USA and it shows so much in the added touch of that scene. This series is amazing, an undeniably favorite of all time for me. There's nothing else like it. It's character development, through amazing performances, and above all the respect it pays to the real souls who were there by taking us into their experiences like no other production I've seen, are its greatest attributes. Enjoy the education of not only a major event in our recent world history, but an incredible story of humanity that will unfold in the coming episodes (via the sense of duty and sacrifice of a generation) and the feelings that may give you. Cheers!

"You've done it now, Yank. You've captured me." I think that may be my favorite line of this episode. Goodness, you're in for a treat with this series. It can be very hard to watch, but I'm so glad this series exists to document what the war was actually like for younger generations, since most of the WW2 vets are gone now.

Capt. Sobel was a taskmaster and trained Easy Company well, but he was missing certain qualities in a Commanding Officer. He was petty & vindictive with his authority. Behavior unbecoming of an officer. Second, he couldn't read a map or understood basic logistics.

I saw this when it first aired; I had been in the Navy for roughly 5 years. This was and still is an amazing viewing experience. I have read the book Band of Brothers, in addition to a couple of books about Richard Winters. He is someone whose hand I would have loved to shake. The type of leader I would follow anywhere. This was my first time watching Damian Lewis in anything and he was amazing as Richard Winters. For me, all the acting I have seen him do does not compare to his role in Band of Brothers. Looking forward to your reactions to the rest of this series.

One thing they kinda messed up just a tiny bit was, during the training in Georgia, they dont really focus in on Meehan too much so when he pops up in the England scenes I got kinda confused, especially since they didnt have his last name on his uniform like some of the others. All in all a fantastic first episode.

A great series. It gets even more intense as you go along. Episode 9 is the hardest to watch. There is an unofficial 11th part called "We Stand Together". Sums and wraps up the series real well. David Schwimmer, who plays Sobel, is famous for playing "Ross" on "Friends" a great funny TV Show that ran 11 seasons from 1994-2005. A very funny show if you have not seen it. It also launched the careers of many well known actors and actresses including Courtney Cox, Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow and the late Matthew Perry. If you want to see a great film that has the war as a general backdrop but the people and events are fictional. I recommend "The Final Countdown" from 1980. A great film about a US Navy ship from 1979 going back in time to December 7th 1941. It is a serious film with a scifi twist. It stars Martin Sheen, the late Kirk Douglas (Father of Actor Michael Douglas) and Kathaine Ross. A great film, that is science fiction, but still respectful to the WWII era. A great film! Great reaction Kate!

I cannot adequately express how much I appreciate your genuine appreciation for both Steven Spielberg's and Tom Hanks' pinnacle work (at least in my opinion), but more importantly, your grasp of the magnitude of the historic endeavor that was the D-Day invasion. Your time tracing E Company's story will fill you with the deepest sorrow and the greatest appreciation, I promise, a journey so worth the taking. Thank you for making this 69-year old man smile at your sincere reaction. Stay tuned. So much more to experience. Steve

Wonderful Kate! I just love your empathy for the men who served, you have a real understanding of thier duty and sacrifice. The scale of D day was enormous, and Spielberg is able to convey its scope convincingly. The gentleman on the bike most certainly fought in WWI and felt a certain knowing kinship with the American soldiers running amuck the English countryside , what was the saying about the American forces based in England ? Oh I remember, " thier over paid over sexed and over here" 😅 I so enjoyed watching this with you and look forward to the next installment. 🙂❤ 0:26 0:26

To fully grasp the gravity of Capt Sobel being replaced: Being in command of a unit is the top privilege any self-respecting officer aspires to. Losing command of your front-line combat arms company before it sees action would be devastating and embarrassing for a captain, and the end of a career. The colonel did his best to soften the blow with some flashy compliments.

There's a lot that I could say here, most of which has been covered by others in the comment section already. So in lieu of repeating what has already been said, I will simply say that I'm excited to tag along on your journey with what is widely-considered to be one of the greatest productions in cinematic history. I've watched this whole series an innumerable amount of times, so I am intimately familiar with it... yet I still always get excited to watch a reactor's experience and hear their thoughts as well 🙂

Thank you, Kate, for taking on Band of Brothers. You are picking things up well. Don't worry about the names, you will learn them as you go. It's about the salutes: after getting chewed out by Colonel Sink (played by Dale Dye, who also did their "boot camp") the NCOs file by Winters and offer a respectful salute. After getting reassigned to Chilton Foliat, Captain Sobel goes by Winters in the jeep and completely ignores the salute he is giving. Respect. It is earned.
