Went to your portfolio (it's gorgeous, BTW) and never could find your how-to on this. did you ever get to making that? Have you ever tried 3d printing PETG blanks, and seeing if those work?

What did you use for the aluminum stylus holder tube? It looks like there's a screw head at the end, as if it's threaded.

This is so amazing as a vinyl and recording enthusiast ive always wanted to make my own records! Definitely gonna try this. Just looking at the design I think tungsten carbide is probably the way to go it will retain edge sharpness throughout the cut. Have you also considered the possibility of using planar speakers in a clamshell configuration and wired out of phase the help with needle movement reduction. Also as a side benefit they tend to have a flat sound profile capable of sub-bas and treble simultaneously with 0 distortion. Just a thought!

Wonderful! I've been considering just such a thing myself! What about one of those new ceramic element soldering irons that heat up in like 20 seconds?? Wouldn't those be ideal in such a project? For instance if you could get a skinny tip with threads on the end, or a socket? And get some small tungsten styluses to fit into the receiver on the iron. ADDED BONUS, the irons are extremely light and easy to induce the vibration.

A simple $20 heat gun would do the same thing as the hairdryer without the possibility of adding excess noise to the speaker based cutting mechanism.

This record noise sample is better than a lot of others in that it isn't quite as rough as the rest. It has a few louder cracks but generally it's better than the majority of the vinyl sounds out there
