Mainly because I wanted to finish the adventure in one go, so I had to save some time. That part was the easiest to cut out without removing significant content.

This is why Cthulhu is such a tricky game as a Player you do get stuck from time to time and a bit frustrated. Also six years late but asking for rolls can help and give Players information that otherwise they wouldn't know to ask about.

This is really good stuff. I spent 10 minutes looking for a PDF of the adventure online, but then after looking through the comments here, I found that it's a home-brew. If you've got enough notes, you should considered publishing on DriveThruRPG. I wish I could keep up the intensity of this GM when I'm running a game. I can do it for an hour, but past that, I start to get a little flat. 6 years old, and still has considerable value. :)

I would have made sure that upon returning to Thistlehold, they would have run into someone looking for his license; the reason they attached themselves to him in the first place. However, I liked the "let Eric come and get him" comment.

All of your points brought forth are excellent and I wish I could present this to some of my group but I don’t want to sound like I am critiquing them unwontedly because they’re trying to have fun enjoy the game but I do need them to lay off on the table talk and the distractions and the getting out of character every other moment what do you suggest?
@TrueMaskGames Жыл бұрын
To be perfectly frank: you just need to talk to them respectfully. You are the GM, right? Which probably means that you are putting a fair amount of work into the game, so that everyone has fun. If you tell your players that you don't find what they are doing "fun", and assuming they are somewhat mature and also really your friends, I hope you should be able to have a calm discussion about it. :)

I love that you uploaded this, thanks so much. I am thinking of running this in my Midderlands game with some tweaks. 1st edition was so good, with its unbalanced careers etc. The 2nd edition was technically an improvement, especially the flavour in the spells I think but for me 1st edition (with some house rules) is still the best edition. A rough diamond.
@TrueMaskGames Жыл бұрын
While I did move on to 2nd edition eventually (to be perfectly honest, most of the magic rules of 1st edition were just bland), I do keep a special place for number one in my heart. It was the first RPG I ever ran after all!
@gommechops Жыл бұрын
@@TrueMaskGames The Petty Magic in 1st edition was a great idea and our group had a lot of fun with it, but yeah magic was really bland. I kind of always wanted something based on real world alchemy and the like, I have been looking at the magic in Lion and Dragon or Beyond the Wall for inspiration recently too. Both OSR variants of D&D although both quite different from each other. 2nd edition magic was a lot more colourful although I do like magic to be rare in WFRP and usually in the hands of the bad guys.

With my online games, we use dice rollers so everyone sees the numbers rolled. It does show that I'm not fudging and gets the players' reactions just from the number instead of waiting on me to describe the situation. It can also mechanically show the players' situational effects that the characters would see - this guy is obviously way above our skill level, we should leave.
@Bryon1187 Жыл бұрын
Not having the monsters in the next area not reacting to fighting the PCs are involved in is just bad DMing, IMHO. Back in the day, we would use dungeons to gain enough levels to go wilderness adventuring, because that is where the real treasures are. 😁

How do you balance time allocation for preparation? At $20 per player, or $100 for five players, with say 4 hours prep, 4 hours play, 8 hours for $100. So clearly not profit, but I would like to know how do you prep for a game efficiently? To maximise the time you do have to create a great game, without it blowing the time budget and other resources?
@TrueMaskGames2 жыл бұрын
That's a question nearly impossible to answer, since "efficient preparation" would look very differently from gamemaster to gamemaster. It heavily depends on what kinds of resources you are familiar with, what strengths and weaknesses you have when it comes to improvisation, and also what kind of campaign you are running. Optimized preparation looks very different when I prepare for a horror campaign, say Call of Cthulhu, from when I prepare for D&D. Sorry that I can't be more helpful in that regard. There are a couple of books out there on that topic (the Lazy GM and things like that), but quite frankly the techniques presented in those were not helpful for me personally at all.

Just a late note regarding the Bleed effect. You get it when you take an Injury, not just normal damage. Along with not wearing any armor. I initially thought the same thing until I re-read the wording in the sentence. We were using the early Zweihänder rules in this video. I think they actually might have changed it in the rules around the same time that this was streamed. Or at least that's how I remember it. I might have simply made a mistake there. It's been too long. Thanks for the correction though! :)
@lobopampeano19802 жыл бұрын
I think the game master is responsible for the general success of the game (meaning everyone having fun). If you change something in order to prevent a super quick resolution in a way nobody notices I think that is ok. Imagine a oneshot adventure that was resolved in 20 minutes. I might feel great as a player for 2 minutes if I was the one responsible but then I would feel frustrated that the game lasted so little and that it wasn´t challenging enough. I would have preferred the game master to solve it somehow (in a believable manner).
@TrueMaskGames2 жыл бұрын
100% agreed! While players have some responsibility with that as well, GMs are majorly involved in it.

Yeah, it's definitely better with the full rules. When I ran a campaign a few years ago it took a few sessions for the players to really see the opportunities but once they had they were all focusing the whole time in combat, not just on their turns. It definitely increases teamwork.
