This is actually only the last verse of a walking song sung by Frodo, Sam, and Pippin in the chapter “Three is Company”. It was a cheerful song not a sad song.

Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! This is the part of the book where they started travelling while hiding from ring wraiths

The hardest scene to watch in the whole trilogy. Breaks my heart. Doesn’t happen in the book. But since it does happen in the movie, they chose the best take IMHO. For this Frodo’s gonna need a whole lot of forgiving. Lucky for him that Sam is a great and magnanimous hero who loves him.

Lord of the Rings The Two Towers was the first movie I was old enough to carry through the subtitles, and although I still carry much aopreciation and affection of the cast of voice actors, damn hearing the actors is something else

Always loved how pippin says Hobbit songs aren't fit for great halls and dark times, and he adapts a song he knows into maybe the PERFECT song for such dark times. And the cinematography during the sequence, literally a masterpiece of filmmaking and music

Of course, they weren’t gay! Love for two men doesn’t have to be sexual you know! It’s called brotherhood! The fact is that type of love is something that is not seen very often today, so people cannot really understand it and label it as a gay relationship. The fact is a love between a master and Servant is something you see in time immemorial such as Squires to their Knights. An apprentice to their masters. When someone of nobility, or of a rich family was born, it was common practice to give them a manservant, or if they were female ladies maid or nurse. Those relationships would become very tight, such as either a friend relationship or a sibling relationship. Sometimes even a father son, daughter mother relationship. Those types of friendships were still very common in Professor Tolkiens day. And as he was an astute student of history, he was well acquainted with those types of relationships going far back into history. Because of that he naturally expressed Sam to being a loyal, brave companion and servant to Frodo. Someone who consider themselves under his master, and would gladly die in his place, but there was nothing sexual about it. Also, to the fact in the book, it was said that Sam kissed his forehead, and towards the end Frodo kissed Sam on the forehead, what many people also do not realise, is as Lord of the rings are set in a mediaeval style. It was very common for people in those places and even up into the 20th century for men to sometimes kiss each other. Knights would often greet each other by kissing each other on the cheeks twice in a way of greeting or parting.

I also like the calmer version, mainly because it implies that while he's messed up and his quest is definitely taking it's toll, he's not entirely lost just yet. The full weight of the Ring warping his mind is then reserved for the Sammath Naur scene.

The calm made it more menacing, in a way, cuz he meant it. It showed he was truly lost, and had submitted to the darkness, and sincerely wanted Sam to leave him. Evil is not scariest as a lashing, screaming rage, Evil is scariest as a quiet , lingering, whisper, which the Ring portrayed, which makes it even more poetic that Frodo's submission to the ring is a calmness.
