allan... some times I will hear these engines with a loud (ignition) knock, and others not...is this because of injectors that need to be overhauled ? Most seem to run smothly , but some rock . Uneven compression, or injectors again ? Did you see my video clearing badly rusted cooling jackets with evaporust in warm engine ?

This motor must have been underwater. There will be salt, dirt, oil, and rust to remove.

The Volvo MD series of engines will run practically forever with a little care. Often they are discarded when some simple repairs would let them serve for decades longer. This MD-2 is running like a watch.

DYNASTART IS A COMBINED GENERATOR AND STARTER. it REQUIRES A CHARGER RELAY / STARTER RELAY AND USUALLY HAS 2 V-BELTS FOR THE FLYWHEEL. NORMALLY, DECOMPRESSION IS TAKEN UNTIL THE SPEED IS ON.

Hi , Just had my MD3B rebuilt. Started overheating after 15min load. Did you have to bleed off the raw water system before starting or dii it fill straight from the strainer, Plenty of water coming out but seems to be by passing the engine block Thanks Donal

afmonter alle dyserør og slangen fre filteret, fyld derefter manuelt diesel i pumpen drej motoren med starteren og se om der kommer små sprøjt op af de tre huller til dysserørene. hvis ikke så check regulatorens bevægelse på hovedpumpen den skal bevæges let frem og tilbage.

I recently got a sailboat that has a Volvo penta Md2b. The previous owner had the engine running just fine when he owned it, but it hadn’t been ran in 4 or 5 years. After months of struggling to figure out why it wouldn’t start I figured out he had installed a timer. That definitely explained some of the problems I was having. But I still am struggling to get it started and keep it running. I have looked over several things including; rebuilding the high and low pressure pumps, I’m pretty positive the fuel is getting to the injectors. It is also super hard to hand crank. I am now working on the electrical system. I am hoping someone out there has some knowledge of this engine and it’s electrical system and is willing to maybe give me a few pointers. Thank you, from a couple trying to go boating;)

the electrical system has nothing to do with how it runs. If the lift pump is weak it will die repeatedly. Crack the nut where the pipe joins the injector... while it is turning over.. it should squirt diesel. You must bleed air out of the injection system or it will not start. once you have the starter working properly, open the compression releases, crank the motor while checking for fuel flow at each point. there are no more rebuild kits for the fuel lift pump, you have to buy a sealed new one built in eastern europe $300-400 in the US. if a diesel has fuel and compression and air, it will run.

to hand crank... open the compression release levers on both cylinders...make sure the the shut off lever is in the ON position... and the fuel valve is open.... crank like mad untill you get the flywheel spinning as fast as you can.. quick like a bunny shut on compression lever... it should start to fire, close the second and it should be running normally. if it doesnt begin to fire on one... and you do have compresion ...then you have a fuel problem.

Hello I have this same engine..where do you put oil for the gear box,or transmission at??? I looked all over ..is it the same as the oil deep stick...the book saids something like is the same oil comprttment but at the same time it shows like it has a input (oil) nd output (oil) plug..I couldn't find it. LOL...my trany is not twerking the propeller shaft. .not sure what's the problem I is?? Model MD3D, gear box MS.

The gearbox is lubricated from the engine, the bolt holding the gear that transmits the power from the engine is pierced and injects oil into the gearbox. There are other engines that have MS gear which has its own oil, which is filled at the dipstick. Take care of this engine it's a great thing. Greetings from Denmark Allan

Allan.. take a look at how I removed rust from my cooling system using Evapo-rust chelating rust remover. This reduced the temp of the lower cylinder by 200 degrees Ffrom 400 + to 185-200 F ! kzbin.info/www/bejne/np2phXl8m9CfrtU

Some Engines you don't want to turn over before you start working on them.This is one of those. I am glad I learned about Evapo-rust a chelating rust remover, because it is the most practical way of dealing with this much rust.. without doing mechanical damage. A whole new way of doing things.. better.

Compression release for each cylinder makes starting a breeze! I had a MD2 with a hand crank on a 42ft. sailboat I had in early 80's, never failed to start, dead batteries meant nothing which was a life saver more than once!

Running just like a watch ! These are wonderful marine engines, and we can see here well appreciated in this workshop ! Shown running is the 36 hp 3 cylinder version, and in the shop the 1 and 2 cylinder versions that share the same cylinder, head, piston, valves, and injector. This is a raw water cooled engine, but I believe there is another version with heat exchanger manifold. I plan to keep mine, and keep it up. The separate cylinders and heads make service in the boat much more practical.
