Sorry for asking, but I know absolutely nothing about soccer. However, I'm watching a sports anime called, "Blue Lock". I'm trying to understand why 4 players stand side by side, as a player kicks the ball. All 4 of them even jump in unison. It's happened twice, so far-- once at the end of the first season during a try-out and once again in the middle of the 2nd season during an exhibition match. I'm just trying to understand why this is so. Any answers are great! (BTW... By any chance have you watched this anime? I must admit that it has grown on me since, I've started watching it. It has made soccer rather interesting!) Again, sorry for the trouble and thank you in advance! 🔵🔒⚽

This happens when an opposing team has a free kick, which is a set piece resulting from foul play. The 4 standing together (could be more or less players depending on how close the ball is to the goal) form a "wall" which aims to block the opponent shot from going into goal. Of course the keeper would be ready behind in case the ball passes over or under the Wall. They jump in order to make it harder for the ball to pass over, and some teams even have a player lie down under right behind the wall in order to prevent a low shot.

Lower block works at times but it needs to be adaptable to game situations.
@mtk37556 ай бұрын
Also does that mean that overloading and underloading by a factor of 2 in odd sequence would be better to employ at the front?? Like sole striker, front 3 front 5 etc. What can the defense line do to combat this without getting them pinned
@mtk37556 ай бұрын
Makes sense why they would adopt a front 3 in this case, if the defender loses track of defense line, they will get great space. Sounds effective to me, but my question about this would be then why coaches now prefer overloading and putting 5 players in front.

It isn't widely mentioned, but note that Southgate was going to bring on Trippier and Gallagher before the winning goal was scored in the 88th minute. As in, he was content sitting back and possibly taking this to penalties again. Just like vs Italy in 2021. Just like vs Croatia in 2018. That just sums up his mentality as a manager. Afraid to be bold. Afraid to take risks. Got here because of his players individual magic. He has definitely gotten rid of the toxic culture that existed during the Golden Generation but at the end of the day, he is not a top tactician and does not deserve to be a champion.

Hey mate I know this is 3y old but wanted to comment. I know low block is typically more narrow and compact, while a high press is often more wide. Can I stay wide in a low or even mid block to maximize the space for when I do end up winning the ball? Want to isolate one of my strikers/wingers since I think I’m favorable in the 1 on 1, just wondering if this really contradicts my stand back approach from a low/mid block to be so wide

Literally ever manager that has managed Kane: alright he lacks pace and a threat in behind but is a wonderful passer and poacher. Play him with a direct runner to optimize the attack. (Son, prime Dele, Lucas, Sterling, Rashford) Gareth Southgate, 2024: Nahhh let's have Foden and Bellingham take turns as the #10 and Saka hug the touchline wanting the ball to feet.

Great analysis. Sometime it’s not about the formation it’s about the players decision and football intelligence. On paper England outnumber Spain in Midfield with a a box midfield[Rice, Mainoo, Foden & Bellingham]. But some how this didn’t turn out to be an advantage. Little movements - made the difference. Well done Spain

Netherlands were too passive england literally passing through them. Spain aint doing that. The England CBs really have to be comfortable playing under intense pressure. @@arno9233I just hope it's not held against England. The ref was suspended for 6 months for being bribed and being an assistant for another ref who was match fixing. Apparently he was the one that whistleblowed it and that's why he's been trusted with big games like this. But I don't know what to believe and it's still very suspicious. Bellingham had called out this ref before and got in trouble for it. English fans were worried about this ref and it turns out he decided to be unfairly biased towards us instead of against us.
