My first job was here in the early 70's, under the director Maggie Moody. The museum had been closed up for years and smell of that place is deeply etched in my memory. I was fascinated and got to touch and clean a lot of cool things. All the stuffed animals and birds were dusted with arsenic. I used to take my little outboard motor boat to work. Fun times!

I had the honor of being Rumney's Old Home Day Committee Chair for 7 years while I resided there around 2000 as a resident overseer of Longyear Museum's Historic House that celebrates the story of Mary Baker Eddy who lived there in the mid 1800s as Mary Patterson. The OHD Committee meetings were held in the Old Town Hall next to the Library. It never rained on the dates set up for Old Home Day, as I recall. Governor Rollins set up the second weekend in August as Rumney's weekend to celebrate and the folks there still keep that date. I am very proud to have been a small part of that vibrant tradition !

I really hope it is saved.. I've shown it to my boys and told them it's a huge part of our state...

I''m praying that you succeed in saving this wonderful, little piece of railroading. We lost do many battles to save stations, which were eventually lost. 6 in Midland City, Ohio, an arsonist destroyed their quaint, wooden station in the early hours of New Years Day, 2024.

Thanks for hosting this Q&A session and then uploading it as well. We are truly lucky to have the NH Preservation Alliance as we attempt to revive and maintain out antique home and barn. What a wonderful wealth of information! I had the question on vertical barn siding and Ian's answer was excellent. My only remaining question (I regret that I wasn't able to attend) is: Should I paint the Vertical Pine Shiplap boards or not? I love the idea of not having to repaint every few years and letting them weather themselves, but I really just want to do what's best for their longevity. On another topic you touch on: I actually grew up 3 doors down from the Ward Clapboard Mill in Moretown VT and loved that Steve called them out. They're an amazing group of people who have surmounted great adversity in keeping their traditional business alive and thriving. As a child my father would take me out fishing in the Mad River by the old mill tubes and where the old dam that used to power the mill was. He told me stories of jumping off that bridge and swimming in the millpond in the 1960's before the dam failed, and how they'd have to be careful of all the old sawblades that were tossed into the 'lower pond'. I actually have a photo hanging in my house of the old dam with his childhood house in the background. Needless to say: if/when I need to buy clapboards for our current 1775 home in Southern NH, it'll be from there.

Thank you for the valuable information! I am in the planning stages of the repair of my 120 year old bank barn in Minnesota. The old stone foundation is going, and the barn is leaning 2 inches. Just getting bids from contractors now. I wish Ian was in Minnesota!
