Simple and Fishy. Great looking pattern. I will have to spin some up! Do you have any issues with durability on the marabou body? Kind of surprised not to see some kind of counter wrap.

I think if that body segment was longer it’d have more exposure but it’s pretty durable. The key is twisting the material so the fibers lock each other down.

if you're using a 6+ weight rod there will likely be a second stripping guide. You can also attach the fly to that instead of the lower stripping guide. I never use the fly keeper, they are worthless in my opinion.
@Gigharborflyshop
@Gigharborflyshop 25 күн бұрын
I never tie to the loop of the fly line. The leader material will cut through the plastic of the loop. The core of the line should still be intact which provides the majority of breaking strength though. But I try to keep my loops clean and tidy. If the loop is wide and hanging up on the guides, it might be looped on incorrectly. The proper way to loop on the leader is to pass the leader loop over the fly line and then thread the tip of the leader through the loop of the fly line, then when you pull down it will make a double symmetrical loop that kind of looks like a figure eight right before it pulls tight. The loop of the leader should be pulling on both sides of the loop of the fly line equally. I hope that makes sense. It's simple, yet complicated to explain with words! haha
@dfoster9007
@dfoster9007 25 күн бұрын
@@Gigharborflyshop Yes I am using the second guide; if your leader/tippet is more than 2x the distance from the back of the reel and that second guide, the leader to fly line loops will be pulled into the upper guides of the top section when you pull the top 2 sections (4 piece rod) down adjacent to the bottom 2. So for example on my orvis 8"6" rod, that distance is 3'6". So if the leader and tippet is greater than 2x that ( or 7 feet) the loops get pulled in. I have a 9' leader so the loops get pulled din by 2 feet.

I’m *completely* with you when you say that fly tying is almost its own separate endeavor from fly fishing. I enjoy it in a way that’s both connected and totally separate from my fishing. The connected part is that you’re always thinking about what will work given what situation, what variation have they never seen, what variation has the edge in terms of a natural presentation, what can I do that I could just never buy if I didn’t tie. But it’s separate in the sense that it’s a completely different activity with its own skill set. Sitting at the bench with music or a good talk show playing in the background while you try a new twist on one of your favorite patterns…

@@GigharborflyshopAs could I, of course. But I agree with your buddy Jack. I do exclusively saltwater fishing and troll my flies and have not been able to change a slow day into a hot day or a hot day into a slow day by changing colors on flies or flashers. I'm a data bug and kept quite detailed logs of my fishing in an excel file with lures, dates time and tidal information individually for thousands of fish over the last 12 years. Of course, I will have days where I'll catch 2 or 3 in a row on a certain color, or side of the boat, but when I run the numbers to draw p values from the totality of the data it gets weighed out to where there is no clear statistical evidence for the color influencing catch rates beyond random chance.

Where is it made? For $550, it better be made in the USA. If not, why not buy Nautilus or Galvan Torque? I'll assume these aren't American made because it was never brought up. But, that's a huge deal for some of us. Otherwise, at $550, Sage had a huge margin and is trying to gouge the typical fly fisher. Which makes me not want to buy any of their products. It would be nice to buy a local, American made rod and reel set up. Great video otherwise.

Totally agree on everything. Good tip is to size up 3 from the rod weight if you are not sure if the reel is designed for DH in mind. For example; if I get a 13ft 8 rod, a reel that is made for wf10 or 11 is a good choice. Hardy made something clever with their marquis and cascapedia, up to a certain range they call them salmon 1, 2, 3 and then you know they are designed for DH. The Sage spey reel is hot, just a shame that they dont have sizes for 14ft 9 and 15ft 10, quite essential sizes for early fishing here in Norway. Wish I watched a video like this when I was new to the spey and DH world....

The 8136 sonic is decent. The X8130 was great. 7130 was pretty good. Didn’t like the 12’ X rods. Loved the 11’ rods. The new X replacement, R8 Spey, has some really sweet rods in it.
