I still remember I got this book when I was twelve and my dad blew my mind when he told me about about how Max Brooks is Mel Brooks’ nephew lol, insane talent in that family

The Manitoba part hit hard, one of the best chapters. When the teenage girl said that winter hit hard, the yelling stopped, the camp got silent and by Chistmas day suddenly there was plenty to eat (implying canabalism) ... blood froze in my veines

Honestly, this reading has left me with so many what-ifs that it delights me to my core. Not to mention just imagining what life in Rapture would have looked like before the Civil War. How the book describes how people look, the cultures of the different groups within Rapture, the various figureheads of the groups in Rapture, etc... It all works to create a stunning work that allows you to imagine any part of the setting. Personally, I'm a fan of the scene of Bill and the others at the Fighting McDonagh set during Christmas Eve. It really makes you feel for the guys working as Rapture's "Police" force, who're one of the greatest ironies. Ryan detested the idea of big government interference, yet still had a sizable police force that was made to do EXACTLY as he ordered. These guys, Sullivan included, were just regular people, forced to take sides in a war that should've never come to pass and that nobody will know about save for a few people that lived through it. You honestly feel for the city as much as the characters, as you read more and more about how the city begins to break down as the situation gets worse and worse. All in all? This book is wonderful and I hope to own and read it some day. For now though? I'll just listen to it on KZbin to fall asleep to. The narrator's voice is rather soothing, and the ambience in the background really helps with the immersion as I fall asleep.

(54:55) “It has been alleged that before the war the sexual organs of Sudanese men convicted of adultery were severed and sold on the world black market.” What in God’s world? So the punishment for merely cheating on your wife once is to be executed followed by your penis being sold on the black market? As an African who was born in Sudan, I can tell you that arcane medieval things like that do happen in Africa such as beheadings, typically related to abandoning Muslim religion. Punishment for adultery in Sudan varies significantly based on gender, as women are punished far more severely than men for the same crime (often stoned to death). But as far as sexual organs being sold on the black market, that’s completely fictional and not remotely a thing. This does happen in other parts of the world but who exactly wants a dead penis or dead testicles? The only value is to preserve it by freezing it and hoping it could be used on a patient requiring the organ. Sexual organs like penis and testicles are nowhere high in demand as kidneys or lungs so it wasn’t necessary for the author to really suggest this line. But he is referring to the world in an apocalyptic state of crisis, where things would be significantly different and we would live in a far more lawless world where anything can happen.

Oh no, it's a lot of bigotry. I raised a brow at the China and Brazil parts but the Sudan part sold me. This is a white supremacist work.

That Kansas little girl' story broke me, getting a perspective from a child on a zombie apocalyptic scenario is horrifying and sad, I never gave it a thought before.

This was written more than a decade ago, long before covid......this is why most simulations give humanity a 1 out of 10 chances of surviving an actual zombie outbreak, WE ARE FUCKED, I can definitely see us doing dumb shit everywhere

We are fucked if shit hits the fan. Listening to the reactions of both nations and people Im like dumbfounded that this is too accurate and real. Whats worse this was written well over a decade ago, are we this predictable?

The closest we've gotten to a book accurate wwz movie was Civil War, and that had nothing to do with zombies.

If they turn it into a series they should make it similar to the wwz game where each episode is different setting or city, place happening in real time spanning months or years until it comes to an end then we finally see a guy going around interviewing people and there storys

The south korean propaganda against north korea is wild. Indoctrination from birth to believe life is menaingless (lmao), eating their own children, and a comparison to hitler (jesus). Are americans the most propagandized people on this earth to believe those things?
