Cutting is insufficient. The roots must be destroyed to prevent re-sprout. A small amount of herbicide like triclopyr applied to the rim of a freshly cut vine will ensure it doesn't resprout.

Imagine if even half the population knew how to spot these invasive species and dedicated even just a couple days per year to eradicating whatever’s growing in their own yard. Lucky me I’ve got bittersweet, multiflora rose, Japanese knotweed, winged euonymus, English Ivy, winter creeper, garlic mustard, and privet at my house. And that’s just what I’m aware of and have waged war against!

I protect all my thick trees and all my thick vines if they are not interlocked. Vines have justvas much beauty and value as the trees. You just have to learn to keep them far enough apart to not let them spread from bottom to top. A 3 foot thich 3 foot deep moat keep the vines in thier own area as they clinmb upwards on a strong stake.

I love fast spreading vines and plants! Thank God for such beauty! I wish cities would be covered in them to cover up the ugly concrete, tar and graffiti 😊

Living vines are great as thick natural fences and walls to establish property lines and extreme privacy! No such thing as invasive species! As long as the plant stay on private property one owns and does not go to neighbors land, then life is very beautiful 😊

Dont kill yourself trying to pull down the vine, cut it at the base and it'll dry up and fall. It's better to cut the vines in winter so you can see what you're doing as there wont be any leaves.

Don't pull those vines down! Cut them as high as you can and as close to the ground as you can. They'll die, dry out, and rot in good time. Try to leave an obvious 5"/6" clear space at the base of the native trees you're trying to save - so that you can tell later that a vine has been cut already. Pulling a still live vine is going to cause a bunch of secondary destruction to the native plant it's growing on. Besides - your time is better used cutting other vines further along.

Just completed the removal of kudzu (root crowns) and bittersweet (roots as much as possible) spread out on 10 acres. Very confident they won't be coming back, but will always have to monitor for sprouts. Mature plants of both species grow in the nearby public/private lands. Started in March, completed a week ago or so, truly truly exhausting. Nobody helped.

I went for a hike on a trail in Michigan, at Maybury state park and was shocked at all the vines killing the trees! They were massive, as if the park isn’t even attempting to save the trees. It’s a small park so I can’t think they have too much else to do. It’s a shame!

I hate vines. I really hate wysteria. What idiots purposely plant this nightmare plant!?!?! Its destructive. Its a ton of work to even reduce vines in trees. I cut a bunch of wild grapevines out of maple trees last year. Im like dont ever let vines even get started. Grrrrr.

Yes wisteria I hate this plant but I chop as much as I can and constantly using Ortho ground clear. It’s been a 10 yr battle but finally getting it out my yard. I hate it that and Rose of Sharon, very invasive too!!!!

Cutting close to the soil and painting immediately with the recommended noxious herbicide (subject to change) is the best practice here .(1/2021)

Wondered why they aren't treating the stem bases with brush be gone concentrate immediately upon cutting. Make your efforts far more effective. I'm a vine assassin.

We have so much multiflora rose you cant even get to trees with vines. Losing battle. But i have been working for 3 years now almost every day in fall and winter doing my best. If only i had some help.

In southern Westchester while these have some presence, the English Ivy seems very dominant.

@@williaml8474 Also in southern Westchester. If I had to say one plant overall, it'd be Tree of Heaven. Then maybe these vines covering everything all over hte Saw Mill parkway as seen in these videos. But we've got it all. We have a lot of problems on my property (we've lived here 6 years, took me some time to understand how deep the issues goes). I've have a problem w/ Royal Paulownia trees, think we've got our tree of heaven under control now, I've now seen that we have some porcelain berry and honeysuckle, starting to cut those vines back. But I walk all over my neighborhood and I just can't even anymore... The aforementioned trees, something that I can't tell whether it is Devil's walking stick or Angelica, multiflora rose, garlic mustard (particularly bad this year). Oh yeah, that all pales in comparison to the barberry bushes EVERYWHERE. They are certainly infesting all the woods and I see them spreading year over year. However, everyone's property is planted with them ornamentally (I think my house has 50 of them!). I guess they were one of the few things that the deer don't eat where I am (they eat everything but barberry, boxwood and andromeda).

Boy, do I appreciate your work! I'm cleaning out 5 acres of woods where the smilax and other vines reach 40-50 feet in the air! Watching you wrestle with the vines made me laugh because I see myself fighting the same problem. That give and take motion, using the tree's springiness is a great technique. Now, if I can find a way to get the tubers out of the ground. I'm working on it. Hope I live long enough!

Working on a 12,000SF urban neglect mostly poison ivy (living for the day I'm past the poison ivy vigilance/scourge!)-can't image reclaiming 5 acres! Good luck!

Did you know? Clayton from Disney's Movie, Tarzan. after their Tree brawl/wrestling in a Tree full of Vines, Tarzan jumped on a Root and go to another Tree, Tarzan let Clayton bunch of vines coming near her, after Clayton got a Vine wrap around his neck, Clayton hangs his head/neck in defeat. Once Clayton died form suspension of the neck and/or neck snapped. The following of the body is the *Shadow* in front of the Tree. This is one of Disney's gruesome/terrifying Villian deaths.

Just cutting grape vines does nothing. They just come back. You need to poison them. And even then they may survive!

Oriental Bittersweet and Porcelain Berry are now invading the Albany Pinebush and areas around Albany Co. A drive along the Westchester's Cross County Parkway or NYC's Belt Parkway shows that these two plants are taking over the vegetated areas along those highways. Can anything be done to stop this invasion?
