I’m deeply annoyed with all the people pressed to debunk those she mentioned would be brown and those whom were African. And to add to say they “arent black” is telling of one’s ignorance. No one is “black” it is simply a descriptive language imposed on those of the African Diaspora by Euro-centric people. So everyone please relax. SMDH.

Finally a professor points out Caracalla, Geta and Macrinus (and Jugurtha, and countless others) would be brown people looking like your typical North African instead of white or black. What a shameless disregard for the people whose history hollywood pillages for profit. Anything remotely reminiscent of a middle-eastern man has to be a villain or a soulless, vaguely hostile backdrop prop either herding sheep or aggressively screaming prices in a dirty market place. Hollywood has been so pointedly dismissive and demonizing towards these groups that this practice isnt even pointed out by those who portray themselves are no-nonsense historical movie critics, so thank you

Jugurtha and Macrinus portrayed as black men (which they aren't) but i guess having the great Denzel washington as one of the main characters, it's somehow an acceptable inaccuracy ... then also during the first scenes of the movie we clearly hear an old Numidian man speaking in Arabic (WTF) 😔

Her association of Russell Crowe's Gladiator character identifying as a farmer with "white southern identity" (presumably the Southern US" is as about anachronistic and irrelevant as it gets. The association in the movie and the book upon which it was based is the "farmer/soldier" trope of ancient Roman military heroism, refering to an idealised type that Romans would very much have appreciated well into the Imperial era, despite farmer soliders being a thing of the past as early as the military reforms of Marius in the 2nd C BCE.

People in North Africa are Mediterranean peoples, they have the same skin tone as Spanish, Greek and Italian people's who are considered white. They certainly wouldn't be as black as the emperor is portrayed to be in this film as that is how sub Saharan Africans look, not north Africans.

Bingo, there were no high-ranking senators or officials who were black either. The historic character that Denzel Washington plays in the movie would have been more Middle Eastern in appearance. Based on the busts and mosaics of the actual person. This lady is off her rocker.

When I first saw the credits showing Caracalla and Geta as caucasians with red hair,I thought WTF! They were of African descent and the bust of a Caracalla clearly shows his African features.A cameo of his father Septimius Severus shows him as black. BUT,this is a Ridley Scott film so even the pretence of some level of historical accuracy isn't to be expected.
@floydtron
@floydtron 28 күн бұрын
Here's the thing - we have a (very rare) contemporary painting of Severus, Caracalla and is mother (who was Arab). The depiction of Serverus seems pretty accurate for a Berber living in North Africa but Caracalla is extremely pale compared to both his mother and father: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Severan_Tondo

Septimius Severus, Geta and Caracalla's father and Emperor, was of Italian descent as was his wife. He just happened to have been born in a northen Africa Roman province. The woke mob decided he was black because there is a mosaic of him, his wife and Caracalla where is skin is dark like he has been out in the sun. Totally Caucasian features.

I was hoping for a non woke analysis. I have been to northern Africa on numerous occasions from Morocco, to Lybia to Tunisia and Egypt. They are not BLACK. that is sub saharanpur Africa. Also the higher up the social class, the paler the people tend to be. In Roman times, the rulers of northern Africa were of Roman descent. DUH or Greek or Macedonian or Thracian, Illurian there were also for centuries Visigoth or Vandal rulers, who were white, not colored or brown. What a noncece professor. She should know this.

@Rebecca-dm1co
@Rebecca-dm1co Ай бұрын
People in higher socio-economic social classes worldwide practice marriage and keep track of who the fathers of children are. This results in a population of less inbred children unlike lower classes who are more likely to engage in tribalistic social and sexual practices. Hence upper classes are lighter skinned. It’s something most people know but its not cool to say so because it doesn’t serve the ruling elites who want to keep the lower classes right where they are by encouraging sexual practices that destroy the culture and gene pool of the lower classes.

This is an interesting comparison of scenes from the film with historical accounts/sources. Additionally, Professor Neel apparently also nresearched the making of the film to understand some of the cinematic choices, which is commendable. However, her comments regarding the use of the Testudo at 6:17 make me wonder if she's actually watched the film! To anyone who has, it's obvious that they're using their shields to keep Commodus and Maximus hidden from view as they rise into the arena, so they can then be theatrically revealed to the crowd. Her criticism that they're using a military maneuver incorrectly is absurd.
