The issue I have with this is what comes across to me as a very superficial description of the sexual instinct as the "enlivening energy" with examples like watching tv shows that hook us (okay, maybe that's part of it). Contrasted with a deeper or ostensively more meaningful definition of the social instinct (connection, social cognition; although i don't know if what psychology refers to as social interactiosn or dyads within the social cognitive contexts can all be subsumsed under this one enneagram instinct) and then SP as this very sort of human understandable instinct. That's my read on it anyway. The issue I personally have is I see sexual as being driven by a desire for wholeness, oneness. That's at the heart of it. Everything else just serves as the guide or means. I mean, at least, that's how I conceptualize it. And that it's not about heart type+SX per se but that it is a drive in ALL people driven strongly enough by SX often not even being able to verbalize it. It is a profound and deep human desire that might compel people their entire life, decades of their life towards the hunt for this. one. thing. It can be that strong. Towards becoming whole/one. And that has sadly been completely dropped from his description. And there can be a lot of emotion around it. I also think this is why people refer to it as seeking intimacy or "one-on-one" because SX energy, even in groups, can tend to unintentionally exclude and be singularly focused. "One on one." It is not literal dyad per se (altohugh it also can be) I read it more as a figurative thing. Edit: Okay apparently he mentions fusion at one point, but it seems like a tangentional point.

I scored as a 2 and an 8 about six-nine months ago and have been receiving Daily Enneagram Thoughts. This is the first time I have really heard that our scores are a product of how we see ourselves and not how others see us which is the confusing part! Also I heard "love who you are. See what's awesome about you. Value who you are." Thank you.

My predominant energy is 8. I so appreciate how you so clearly explain how power and sensitivity go together! This has been a lifelong issue for me in trying to balance the two. While I learned on my own that this was essential, I still somehow felt like it was a rather unique challenge. This helped to so clearly validate my experience! Thank you.

This is some bullshit. The CEO owes these self entitled employees nothing but their worth to the company as an employee. Their worth is determined by their skillset and how easy or difficult it is to find someone of the same skill. Not many employees have the necessary training to be a CEO, therefore, the CEO is worth more on a financial level. The CEO is not being selfish or entitled, they justly earned their salary.

As a Scottish type 4 I found it surprising to hear so many non-4s want to be a 4…I struggled to accept I was a 4 and was sure I was a 1 then 2 then 3 then maybe 5 until I just had to be honest and accept I was a 4. In my culture there is a lot of shame attached to being a 4 - grief and sadness are to be swallowed and ignored and individualism, aesthetic purity, beauty are seen as vanity and pretentious. I definitely had to lean into my 3 wing to be accepted that I would burn out a lot just from not being authentic and struggling to do 3 as a 4 which was incredibly intense and exhausting. I also had to satisfy my type 1 mother and type 9 father by shutting down strong emotions and following their ways which was suffocating. There is a lot of joy in being a 4 in health and acceptance but so much pain before reaching that point I’m not sure why anyone would want that…even if secretly I know I would never want to be anything else. I also resonate a lot with difficulties living in the world…I have said many times that I don’t know how to be a normal person…all that human doing is alien to me. I love the way you teach the enneagram Russ…you and Richard Rohr showed me the essential qualities and energy of the types and that helps a lot because personality-wise we can wear many masks due to culture and family contexts as well as gender etc. but we wear them in a way particular to our type which is important to understand.

Exactly. It's tough being a type 4, more so in a environment which do not accomodate our sensitivities and feelings.

It was so good hearing this explanation of the instincts as a collection of reactions we have that are in constant fluid motion in the body, mind and heart. I have been researching and hunting to find out what my dominant instincts are and racking my brain! It's relieved confusion and helped me to relax about it, and to see all these things in my life. Thank you

Thanks, Indigo, for sharing your grounded knowledge. I was reminded of a quote from the diary of Caroline Fox, a 21-year-old Quaker woman, writing in 1841: "The first gleam of light, ‘the first cold light of morning’ which gave promise of day with its noontide glories, dawned on me one day at meeting, when I had been meditating on my state in great depression. I seemed to hear the words articulated in my spirit, ‘Live up to the light thou hast, and more will be granted thee.’"
