If there is much wind this will be tough to keep the candle lit. Still a great idea and method. Usually when it is so cold luke this there isn't as much wind as when it's relatively warmer. A candle inside a small tent would be cozy if you had one of course.

The DEC needs to re introduce Wolves and Mountain Lions to the Adironacks. The deer population are effecting the new growth forest. Cougars would make walks more interesting.

@@jo-qf3rv A lot has changed since the 80s. Fewer hunters, fewer deer harvested, and more car/ deer crashes statewide. Under Kathy jochul, the DEC has become a dumping ground for political boot lickers and donors. I hope someone revisits the idea after Kathy Jackal terms out.

@@jo-qf3rvwhile I’ve never heard if any wolf sightings, there have been many reports of cougars in the park. DEC won’t go as far as to say they are back, but I think that’s only because they have a policy that basically says that they don’t consider an animal as “established”, until they have 20 years of proof they are there.

It's a good and proven technique. You may want to develop your camera work a bit, though; perhaps providing a full-body perspective so the newbies have a better idea of what's going on. I generally lay a small bundle of sticks or boughs down to break contact between my feet, seat, and the snow or ground.

always carry enough to set up a quick overnight emergency camp and make the decision to pitch camp rather than leave with an hour of sun left. That can be as early as 3:30 PM in some places. n I've done similar in that weather. With basic boy scout learning from the days when WWII vets led troops, it is easy. They taught us how to camp in a swamp in summer, on a wooded ridge in winter. Winter, one of the biggest things they stressed was "be wearing only dry clothes at sundown and hang your damp clothes near the fire". So always hike with an extra pair of socks and at least an extra hat.

My grandfather was in World War II. He was in the battle of the bulge., Ardennes forest he would talk to me about how cold it was. An emergency camp would work for the night. This is perfect though just to settle down and get the jitters out and get nice and warm so you can figure out what to do next thank you for the comment.

Yeah, when you’re really in that situation you have to force yourself to stay calm. I’ve been lost three or four times in the past first time was terrifying but after a while it’s just kind of like yeah you figure it out. It’s not like you’re in Patagonia. The secret is to keep it simple or you’re going to be you’re losing things. It’s best to just keep it simple and practical I’ve used this method before and it works good that candle if you really wanted to let it burn could go for hours. Thanks for the comment.

Used to go hunting there, My dad was a Maine hunting guide, Was told always carry a bic lighter, and a whistle, if lost do NOT panic and run and sweat, Look for a birch tree, peel off the bark, start a fire go to a tree and slow walk around the tree . do NOT panic and run, dad had found 2 guys who got lost, ran untill the sweated, tore off their clothes then froze to death.. yes I got lost once but found my way out, its very easy to get lost.

Good video. You are correct about the Sawyer and freezing weather - freezing while the media is wet shatters it, leaving it non-functional (it will pass water, but no longer filters). Solution is simple - shake it out and keep it in your bedroll at night, an inner pocket on your body during the day.

Excellent recommendations I have considered eliminating a few other items since I have shot the video. Usually, I will also keep that pack and back of my car if I decide to just go camping for the night so I kind of have a hybrid scenario going on there but thank you so much. It would eliminate a lot of weight.

If I had to hike 40 to 100 miles the logical ranges of an hour-long drive. At the fastest speed hiking. It should be about 20 miles a day. I would not have taken as much as you. In some areas. While I would have carried more in others. 1. You do not need as many lighters, and candles, You do not need candles. You could use 1 lighter, 1 rod. It would be fine. You really do not need the rod. Just two lighters would save you a ton of weight. With a flashlight. That is talking about redundancy. 2. One knife, one cheap lightweight trawl. The axe really is a maybe. A multi-tool is a great idea. The thing is. The multi-tool is wiser than a knife. You will not need a saw. So one knife, one multi-tool, and one trowel. Again many long-distance hikers carry a lot less. 3. Cloths, socks, 5 pairs. 5 pairs of underwear. Good comfortable shoes running shoes, or trail running shoes. They are the same thing. These shoes need to fit you perfectly. 1 Rain jacket, or umbrella, or poncho. 4. A sleeping system. Bivy sack with a mat that will keep you off the ground while you sleep hidden in a bush. 5. Medical kit with needle and thread. The medical kit should have stuff for minor cuts, over-the-counter pain meds, caffeine pills, and things that are good for your feet. Blister fixing stuff. 6. 1 32 ounces of water with the water purify pills. 7. The rest of your space should be 100% food. You will want a ton of calories because you are burning many calories while walking. Even mix in multivitamin pills. I am going to guess that you will need 2000 calories a day. With a cooking kit. OR Cash and your phone will also fix this. Call a cab. Have them drive you home. bUTwHaTIF?!???!?!??!? You have failed your selves during COVID-19.
