WOW! I didn't realize that one of my Mooty ancestors, a brother of my direct ancestor, was a high school principal and a teacher of ancient languages and rhetoric. A Truitt ancestor was a partner in one of the Calloway textile mills.

A few years ago I visited LaGrange, the hometown of three roots of my ancestors, Truitts, Mootys and in 1898, Hayes. I checked property records and discovered that the Mootys had owned much property in downtown LaGrange. They also had some farms. William and Mary Ella Mooty (1833-1911 and 1844-1925 respectively) had 9 children who survived to adulthood and hence they would have had some farms in the area. Mooty Bridge Rd covers one of the farmhouses and it leads to the Mooty Cemetery. How can I get documents of deeds so that I can locate these properties of the Truitts and the Mootys? My g-grandfather John Lee Hayes was a blacksmith whose occupation was usurped by automobiles in the early 1900s. In the early 1900's, I think 1920's, my g-grandmother Anna Pearl Mooty Hayes became the matron of the Sate Prison Farm nearby and her husband became the warden until prisoners framed him in a sandal of taking women prisoners to the shed. My grandmother attended the Women's college during that time, riding the Prison Farm horses almost daily.

Thank you for this! Do you have any history about Baltimore Strickland’s gas station? I believe he was one of the first black men to have a small station. I believe it was on Liberty.

Thank you, Alton, as always letting know about the meaningful folks and their works in the great City of LaGrange. What Kwasi and Stacey are doing, as leaders and examples, is so important right now. You are ahead of the curve--I live in CT, and my city could learn from you. Your work on behalf of your community is truly outstanding and inspirational. "Let your food be your medicine and your medicine be your food," so said Hippocrates. Through healthy food, you are making a difference. LaGrange is where my husband and I plan to retire! We grow vegetables here in our "yarden" and at our church, providing food for a monthly pantry at the Temple down the street from our church. Native Americans believed in living in a way that provides for the next 7 generations. You all are doing that! City Week is a wonderful community resource. We don't have anything like it where we live. I think LaGrange is the right scale in size, and every time we visit, we are so impressed. All the best from your fans in Norwalk, CT!
