Could applying a strong vacume to the mix raise the density? I'm sure there is some entrained air from within the dried clay and the mixing process.

pottery plaster is a unique material ? or i can use common plaster of pairs?
@HobbyCeramicraftАй бұрын
It's best to use a plaster that is designed for castong with. The regular (cheaper) plaster of paris will not have the strength, may do a partial job, but not hold the detail as well, or as long as Keramicast Plaster.

hey mold master please reply, i have a doubt when we cast plaster in mould, before pouring plaster brushing 3 coat plaster can avoid the air bubble pores at product surface and get better finish after taking out product from mould am i right?

If you are pouring onto damp clay you will very rarely ever see air bubbles.

I basically...pummel bone dry clay until it is powdered, and then add water mixing until it's very thin paste density. if I want to use it as workable clay again, I then leave it on a plaster "Bat" to dry to the needed density.

Thanks for your previous reply Can I ask, what is the most plaster mould pieces youve ever made? I heard for the Maquette example made for 2005 King king film (kong battling the dinosaur) it took 50 mould portions, BUT I don't understand how anyone can join curved plaster portions even when using keys/locks, without them falling over
@HobbyCeramicraftАй бұрын
It's not sensible to have a mold with too many pieces, as that makes it a puzzle to assemble and strap together, and every join will make a raised line on the piece that needs to be cleaned off. Better in my opinion is to make a mold simple that has fewer parts to it, and if the shape is complicated, make separate molds and join them together after casting.
@nigeldonaldson1647Ай бұрын
@@HobbyCeramicraft I agree but there are times when say a...four part mould might be necessary, because of under cuts trapping pieces

Hi my sodium silicate is 140’s and is like treacle,do you use know if I should use less of it? Your sodium silicate pours more like cream.

Sodium Silicate comes in varying thickness liquids. 140 will be like treacle. The one we use will is like honey. Try thinning yours down with water when you mix into the slip.

Can u use any type of clay in slipcasting? Like SDB or SAE?
@HobbyCeramicraft4 ай бұрын
I'm not familiar with those other clays you mention. The principle is the same but you will find other clays have different consistencies when made into a slip and require different amounts of deflocculant to get flowing. Generally i'd stick with a s.g. of around 1.75 for most clay slips.

hmm.. the lid switch is specifically there to protect you from getting a shock.. I agree that you need to be cautious, of course, but if the lid switch is not operational, you must get sorted as this is a requirement in many countries.
@QuentinKarmark5 ай бұрын
How would you do this to make vessels for liquid? As in a specific wall thickness?
@HobbyCeramicraft2 ай бұрын
Well it depends on the slip. If you were casting with a strong high temperature clay like porcelain then you could go quite thin, maybe 3mm, but if you are using earthenware slip, I'd head for around 4-5mm. The larger the item the thicker you'll want it as a thin piece will struggle to hold its own weight when wet.

Slip must coat your fingers and not be Drippy. Correct Gravity.
@HobbyCeramicraftАй бұрын
Yes, coating fingers is good. Getting the correct gravity is the best way of ensuring you have the right ratios of clay to water though, do not just rely on sight.

Measure 100ml water in plastic tube/Mark it and then take Slip up to the 100ml mark and it will give you the Gravity of the Slip. As per Mr Mikkel

The terra bella glazes prefer a slightly lower temp, try a cone 06. The speed is less of an issue. Also, they are glazes in their own right, so do not need any glaze on top.

That was very simple to understand. Not yet slip cast, but have just ordered my first mug mould. When do you take off the lines on the clay.
@HobbyCeramicraft9 ай бұрын
I like to do that when the clay is leather hard. If you leave until dry then you will make a bit of dust, so do when the item is still a bit damp and the clay flecks will drop off in chunks.

Do you know what cause the kiln power fail?
@HobbyCeramicraft9 ай бұрын
Not really, there could be many reasons.. Check the power from the fuse board is all good, then investigate into the kiln. If no power at the board, it is unlikely a component issue in the chamber.. check fuses in the kiln which are protecting the computer.. or maybe the computer itself..

Will this process work with clay that was not originally made for splicasting? I reclaaim all my clay from throwing and what not and I am wondering if I could try out slipcasting by using those leftovers for starters by just buying a 10 euro bottle of sodium silicate...
@HobbyCeramicraft10 ай бұрын
I also make slip from regular wet clay. Oddly, making slip from blocks of wet clay is not as simple as from dry.. you have to really mix and mix to break down the chunks of clay to get a slurry.

Have you ever used sodium dispex? I was pushed towards it more but seems to be lacking a bit for me
@HobbyCeramicraft10 ай бұрын
I find sodium silicate works more effectively. The dispex is a blend of sodium silicate and soda ash, which balances the deflocculation preventing a cast being too brittle with sodium silicate alone.
