Speaking of the bears, on North I set my pack down and within about 30 seconds I had a chipmunk on it. But I really wish someone would design a t-shirt with "Manitou Island Bears" on it, like a football team logo, with a chipmunk in a helmet. I think that would be hilarious.

In August of 1981, my three bothers and I traveled to South Manitou Island on a 16' Glaspar Speedboat. We launched from Glen Haven, Michigan. We almost lost our lives. DUMB!

I'm glad to see that the reports about the mosquitoes being thick enough to make the place unbearable aren't true. And it makes sense, you would need a lot of warm blooded creatures for them to feed on, but I wanted to be sure!

My friend and i camped on South Manitou Island back in the early 1960's before it became a national park. The Francisco Morazan was still in one piece at the time.

Lou passed away at 107 years of age. He had a life well lived and skiing was obviously a large part of his long life.

Awesome video. We use to spend two weeks every August with family at a farm house just to the east of the ship wreck and would walk to see it every summer

Outstanding! I've dove with Chris many times and he's one of the most professional and knowledgeable divers I know. This area has some very interesting dives.

It's time to daylight the damage to wildlife that mountain-biking perpetuates. As you can see from the video with the frightened deer running suddenly away, mountain bikes are fast, they are silent and they cause enormous distress to wildlife who cannot see them coming. They are in their home, making a living, feeding young. Time to re-frame 'recreation' with more attention to the consideration for animals and their habitats.

I stumbled upon this ferry while being google mapped back to Detroit from the U.P. As I was driving towards the water, I was sure google had messed up the directions, but the ferry operator waved me on and my mind was BLOWN. It was an amazing unexpected experience!
