I grew up with those irons and played it until early 90's. I can still game them.

I love a good laminate.
@robertakerson7186Күн бұрын
I have gotten the impression that laminate clubs were more often present in Great Britain than solid wood ones; is this true? Anyway they seem to work about the same.
@ClassicGolfClubsКүн бұрын
@@robertakerson7186 From about 1960 I'd guess that laminates became the dominant material in Britain, until then persimmon was quite common too. But yes, as far as playing goes there's not really a lot to choose between them in my experience.

I got a set of these for free someone was throwing out (Among a lot of other trash clubs). I took the 8 iron out during the week just to give it a go. The shaft is spotted with rust and the grip is like saddle leather. I wanted to see how it strikes the ball before I invest any time into restoring it. Honestly I was shocked by how forgiving this club is. Definitely gonna take the rust off them and polish and refinish the shafts and regrip them. Keep them as a set for friends to play with. They're awesome.

I’ve played directors, producers, and apex since the 70s. Although I’m playing producers now, directors are my all time favorite and I’d switch back if I could locate a set of irons with minimal wear.

The top was flat to give strength to the frame of the face, much like Jailbreak tech today. The ISI tec had a variable thickness face to help with off centre hits. The hosel was inserted into the top of the club to give heel overhang, this was to move the centre of gravity more towards the middle of the face, much like Hogan's underslung hosel in the irons. I just got a ET 10* tec which has a shaft in it dated November 2001. Tested it against my 2022 driver, the tec goes further by 10 yards. Oh and the tec cost $27 with delivery. Now tell me it's ugly 😁

Have a set of Zings and Eye 2s, for that matter, that go in the bag several times a year. On another note, while watching your swing, I notice you let go of the club with your left hand as you finish your follow through....Good players rarely do that. If anything, they might let go first with their right hand.

the trouble with those clubs is that Tommy Armour was never a manufacturer of golf clubs. and to simply acquire the copyright to the name and then slap it on an existing manufacturer, that was really only a second tier brand anyway, leaves it difficult to get excited about. the Silver Scot model has some historical significance with MacGregor so i'd rather have a set of the 60's Mac Silver Scots.
@bladerunner628215 күн бұрын
yes, Tommy Armour is synonymous with someone my age (b 1952) with MacGregor Tourney clubs from the 50's thru 60's.

I am relatively new to this game but practicing lots and improving quickly. Just picked up a full set 3-P of these MX20s with the original stiff graphite shafts for less than $150CAD. After a few sessions on the simulator I am confident I will be able to play these well and will probably play them for long time. much less punishing than my buddy's MP53s in terms of feel

I prefer the callaway adapter because I don't play 360 grips... it's very annoying having to redo grips every time you want to tinker... I recently bought a Ping driver with a 360 grip on it so I'm going to tinker with it for a bit and when I find the sweet spot setting I'll lock it in with one of my normal grips... not ideal but the Max 10k forgiveness will hopefully be worth it haha

Have callaways, pings, yet still go back to the wilson 51 irons. Shot my best scores with these great feeling clubs. Have a high flight on the short irons yet can hit great boring shots with 5 and up.

had a set of these once. probably bought them used in the late 60's off an ad in the local newspaper. had white grips that i hated. never really had confidence with them. had cool rounded toes. went on to hogans, titliest and then back to vintage haigs and muirfields that i now use. always felt a little clunky.

I just got one 2 weeks ago local here in Myrtle Beach. It's in good shape and came with original headcover and both the carbon and titanium sole plates. Got it for 50 bucks. It has the Aldila Rogue A flex shaft. I'm not in love with the sound but the results have been very good I must say. I tried stuffing it with cotton balls and other things and it seemed to hurt it's performance so I just play it as is...

MacGregor's last hurrah was Olazabal's Masters win in '99, when they made some highly customizable blades. In the early 2000s, Aaron Baddeley was using their V-Foil Tourney irons (their last great iron) and Greg Norman had one of those weird MacTec drivers, but they were pretty much an afterthought by that point. They never had a dominant driver after the persimmon era, but their irons kept them afloat for awhile longer. I do miss them, but technology passed them by.
