I’ve been enjoying your Julii campaign. I’m also doing the Julii but I’m going for world conquest since I completed the campaign a while back. Taken out Britannia and the Gauls, fighting in Spain and about to start hitting Germania. It seems they have been expanding east a good ways and the Thracians appear to be doing good as well. Have you ever done the Thracians?
@CZ-Gaming27 күн бұрын
Glad to hear it! And definitely, world conquest is a fun target after having done the campaign already. Any specific tactics you plan on using to beat Germania? I've haven't tried Thrace yet actually. I do plan on doing another campaign here sometime, with a non-Roman faction. Playing as a 'barbarian' nation requires a different approach so would be interesting. I'll keep Thrace in mind.
@b1gtex69926 күн бұрын
@@CZ-Gaming For Germania, I have 2 full armies pushing in so for now, capture as many towns as I can before they are able to shift forces from the east. I’m just seeing groups of only 3 to 4 units so I’m assuming their main forces are to the east. I’m making a number of spies to try and find their main groups. I want to start building up my troops on the Italian boot to be ready for the civil war. I want 3 armies. I usually have 4 to 5 cavalry, 3 archer and the rest infantry units. Thrace was fun to play. They have a mix of barbarian units and phalanx type units.

If you don't know it bridge battle are king 3 units of mercenary pikes and all the Cretean and roman archers you can muster. Maybe a few infantry for backup and some light cav for clean up and you can trade over 300-1 with them all day

Great tip! Trapping on the bridge is indeed the next part of the plan. Pikes can imagine are great at holding the fort. I’ll swap some units around to optimize the defense there.

how did you manage to move the troops without leaving the formation

I bought the Rome Re-Mastered and am playing with a Realistic mod. It's better because a lot of the Leaders have infantry bodyguards, so they don't die as easily. I still play at VH/VH and with Iron Man rules, to keep it interesting. The UI is a bit awkward but the game is much like the original, without the Rome II 'improvements' that were so broken.
@CZ-Gaming7 ай бұрын
Good to hear you got it! Which faction did you end up going with for your campaign? Generals as infantry is an interesting one as well. Rome 2 gave the choice, definitely less likely to die as infantry. Suppose cavalry is good though in case the battle goes south and they need to run ;)
@thomashazlewood46587 ай бұрын
@@CZ-Gaming Yes, as cavalry they could run away but rarely did, as they died on kamikaze attacks. I am playing as Rome. On this Realism mod you first have to conquer the Etruscans, Samnites and Boii, and also deal with the Greeks and Pyrrhus and his nasty army. Then, you can't walk into Sicily without incurring a war with Carthage, so, you have to build up for that, too. By limiting myself to fighting solely with Roman legions and Italian Socii troops, I feel it gives a more realistic version of Rome's difficulties. I still recruit German and Gallic horse when they are available as mercs, and I'll be buying Iberian mercs when I get there, too. My first run-through was just too easy using the mercs that are TOO available. After a while, Rome has so much money that it was just easier to by mercs when far from home. If you have any thoughts/suggestions on Iron Man rules, I'd like to hear them.

Appreciate the tip. I haven’t done much with mods yet, early experiences had too many bugs for me.. I checked this one out though, looks massive and well respected indeed! Would take me a year of videos to finish the campaign though ;) perhaps I’ll do one with narrower campaign victory conditions to curate an earlier end.

In your first battle (of this video) against the Britons your reinforcements weren’t under AI command. So, when they appeared at the edge of the battlefield, as you didn’t have a full stack, it released a maximum number of units required to give you a full stack only. Had you placed the reinforcement army under AI, all units would have joined the battle.
@CZ-Gaming7 ай бұрын
Appreciated! Awesome, thank you. I’ll keep that in mind next time. Not sure if I’m comfortable giving legatus AI control of a prized legion haha. I suppose having them on standby to replenish main lines 1 by 1 if needed is also valuable. Hope you enjoyed the episode overall and thanks for tuning in again!
@ArmChairCritic07 ай бұрын
As with your other battle, you’ve placed your range units right up front, exposed and vulnerable, and not activated fire at will on your Hastati. You may find that if you place your Hastati up front fire at will, with your range units tucked behind your front line, put guard mode on, then move this battle formation steadily towards the enemy, you’d speed up the battle, take out their infantry more quickly as you smash into their flanks with your Cav. You almost lost this battle due to a poor battle formation, didn’t use range weapons more effectively, and faffed about trying to turn the enemy.
@CZ-Gaming7 ай бұрын
Hi there! Thanks for dropping by again. Early battles definitely are not going to win any prizes haha. Ranged attacks are indeed vital, relying a lot more on this in the more recent battles. Got one battle where we even do most of the city assault with our ranged units as they didn't want to sally out :) Appreciate your thoughts, will keep in mind.
@ArmChairCritic07 ай бұрын
I can understand a fort at the Pyrenees to limit Spains advance North into your territory, but not the fort by the bridge near Massilla. A decent army with range units would quite easily defend that area. The fort to the north west along the coast may also prove pointless, but moving it farther east along the coastline would be more effective. Forts positioned to your Eastern border would prove effect against the opportunist Britons. On the battle I noticed that you drew up the battle formation with three archer units exposed in the front line. As the enemy advanced you then repositioned your units but then had to pull the archers back behind infantry without getting off a single arrow. I would have used that line up of two rows of infantry with my range units tucked in behind the infantry (set to fire at will), they could start picking off the advancing army before they reached your front line. Also noticed that you hadn’t set your Principes to fire at will, meaning they didn’t get a chance to throw their pilum at oncoming charging units. Making the best of range units really does help to wear the enemy down.
@CZ-Gaming7 ай бұрын
Thanks for tuning in! Hope you enjoyed the episode. Appreciate your thoughts on it, good points. For the forts, I appreciate that some are indeed not best place if seeing it from a defensive point. To be honest, some I really just put there to buy myself an extra turn and time to intervene in case of an enemy push. Whilst some are indeed good use to staff with a defensive army to hold! Yeah you're right on the archers not getting their shot off. In the earlier episodes I always had them behind the infantry with that same thought indeed. I ran into the issue there that they tended to get one shot off, but became hard to use as soon as infantry lines clashed (friendly fire danger). I'll have a thought on this one, perhaps swing them around to the sides when lines clash could give them a better angle. Really appreciate your thoughts and hope to see you on the next one!
@ArmChairCritic08 ай бұрын
Your battle formation was poor. Should have grouped both Hastati units together, with your range unit tucked in behind. Position the Cav unit near the settlement alternative entrance. Take out as many of the enemy with your range unit and the Hastati pilum before charging into the worn down enemy flank.

They broken skirmishers reduced morale. Once the first histati unit broke, the general started hitting already engaged units in the flank. He rolled your entire line.

Fair assessment. Went over the footage a few times after the episode and true indeed. I'll keep an eye on it in future engagements. Probably worth having some fallback units behind the line to step in right? Either way, thanks for tuning in. Hope you're enjoying the series!

I'm afraid AI has always been and continues to be one of the challenges in Total War games haha. To be fair, probably also the hardest part to code into the game for the developers. I'm not a CS expert myself, but I imagine it might be complex. Are you happy with their progress on the AI front in newer titles?

@@CZ-Gaming I started playing TW games with the original Shogun, long ago. The last TW game I got was Shogun II. I quit playing after the Rome II disaster. I was disgusted listening to their spokesman touting all the wonderful improvements they had made. It took them a year to make it at all playable! And they had switched to a new battle mechanic that caused every fight to turn into blobs. They threw away everything good. I didn't waste any more money on them. I know a lot of people are playing things like Warhammer, and they like it, but my allegiance to the games ended at Rome II. I only play the older games now, such as Napoleon and Shogun. I'm watching to see if the Remastered Rome is worth trying, though I can't find the right mods for it, yet.

I have to say that the weakness and quick fall of Carthage is disappointing. It makes the game look too easy.
@CZ-Gaming10 ай бұрын
Appreciate you following along with the series, hope you’re enjoying them! It is a big minus of this game. I feel that they make everyone weak in the beginning to ease the player into it and allow building up one’s empire. But at the starting date, the likes of Carthage should already be powerhouses. Increasing the difficulty I find just allows the AI to cheese the mechanics, so I’m afraid it’s just a structural issue :(

Ahh... Scipio is not so lethargic as I remembered. heh, They took Thapsus already! Lol... When you took the walls, I finished eating, washed the dishes, used the bathroom, and returned and the troops were still maneuvering inside the city. Surely this will turn out well! Oh, my... Bye, bye Velites Ahh... I thought you'd enslave at Carthage. You said earlier that you wanted to build up the smaller cities' population. That would have been an appreciable boost, over 7,000. It would also make the city easier to keep happy.
@CZ-Gaming10 ай бұрын
Careful approach haha, appreciate that took a while. Previous Carthage assault flashbacks kicked in ;) I do want to build up the smaller cities indeed. I personally always felt that large, other cultured settlements tend to be quite hard to appease at first, so then sometimes I exterminate to squash some opposition. Egyptian cities are a prime example of that in this game!
@thomashazlewood465810 ай бұрын
I missed hearing the speeches in other TW games. Glad to hear them again. Hmm... Again you treat your Generals as cavalry and then send them far from your troops. Could have been worse! That initial rout could have been disastrous. I wonder if the Sabine wives found that their condition was much improved with the Romans, thus leading them to speak for peace? My experience with Rome 1 was that the Scipio were not very aggressive after taking Sicily. Carthage was usually allowed to build up with molestation. I don't like leaving a Gaul army sitting on your border.
@CZ-Gaming10 ай бұрын
Fair point, soon as I’ve got separate cavalry built up I’ll use the general more on the main battle front. From what I know the wives’ main motivation stemmed from them having settled and caring for their partners and of course kids. I’ll have to check if they were actually better off in the Roman society!
@thomashazlewood465810 ай бұрын
Does the Diplomacy permit for bribing Narbo Martius into Rome's hands? Hmm... Very ahistorical approach, but the, the game is, too. lol I agree about the UI being a bit inferior. Regarding the AI, I'm wondering if the old Darth Mod was updated for this game? It really made battles more challenging. I'm also looking at the Europa Barbarorum mod. I don't know if the latter affects the AI skill. I'm watching a horror show at the walls of Carthage! Wow! And, that unit is NOT your cavalry, it's your General! He should remain with the troops, adding his bonuses for proximity, yes? Oh, my! It's worse than I thought. Really, though, you might have expected HIS Generals' units to be strong, too, especially if you had backed them into the city square. Gah... annihilation! You may console yourself that more than one Roman army met a similar fate at the hands of Carthage.
@CZ-Gaming10 ай бұрын
Think the game would allow it, but unless I’m fully ready to move into Gaul I’ll stay behind the alps ;) As for the Darth Mod I’m not sure. First time I actually invested in a set up that runs games properly, so I never got to experience mods before! Darth Mod one you’d recommend?
