I can't wait to try this! 🎉 I've been turning my house into a Gingerbread House for 5 years now using double sided carpet tape. This may be the solution to all of my anxiety everytime the wind picks up in south Texas! Thank you for posting this.

I'm just curious, why use EMT and why not use PVC for the pipe at the bottom? It would fit better in the T and be cheaper. Is there a benefit?
@NiFamilyLights
@NiFamilyLights 15 күн бұрын
Great question…You could use PVC for the base bar, however, there’s a lot of force on the T’s due to the bent PVC. So that base bar needs to be stiff enough to counter act the force of the PVC arch trying to straighten itself out. EMT is much more rigid, so it’s much better at maintaining the shape without bending. Until the curved PVC piece completely reshapes and relaxes in its curved state, a PVC base will likely also bend outwards as well due to the forces applied to it at the Tees. If you’re able to get the curved PVC piece to reshape and relax more readily to where it’s not trying to straighten out and bend the lower bar, then a PVC base could work.

Works 50/50 in Phoenix Arizona soil. We have been putting in political signs and often have to reposition them. We pound 3/8 and 1/2" rebar in at least 1 foot with an 18 pound driver. Sometimes we have to use a drill to make loosen the dirt because the ground is so hard it bends 1/2"+ rebar (3/8" bends easily anyway). Using vice grips to remove them is standard practice with people who do these signs. However, after the election, pulling them up is going to be hell without something better than vice grips. Nonetheless, vice-grips work great for lesser projects.

Hi can you tell me what size a fuse you use, for a f16v
@NiFamilyLights
@NiFamilyLights 17 күн бұрын
The fusing size can be debated. I use 25A fuses between the power supply and the F16 board. However, I believe each power input to the board is rated for 20A. That rating should be verified but I’ve not ever had any issue with the setup. After running a bunch of tests with real world pixels, rarely will any single output draw anywhere near 5A. So, the possibility of driving all outputs at the max is highly unlikely. The 5A board fuses and 25A fuse from the power supply are really there to cut power should there be a short somewhere. I’ve had 5A fuses go but never the 25A power supply fuse. Good luck!

how do you use 1 rasberry pi and connect the 2 falcon controllers so they are running correctly?
@NiFamilyLights
@NiFamilyLights Ай бұрын
@dman3166, the 1 Raspberry Pi is connected to the two Falcon controllers via a standard Ethernet switch, as the data from the Pi to the falcons is standard IP Ethernet data. The falcon’s have their own static IPs which are also defined in xlights.

What is the total weight?
@NiFamilyLights
@NiFamilyLights Ай бұрын
I don’t know the weight exactly, but they are relatively light. The majority of the weight is the weight of the PVC. So, I’d guess the single windows are a couple of pounds or so. The frames with the wooden support crossbar are a little heavier, maybe another pound or two more.

I've watched this several times. I have modeled this in xlights. wasn't until this last time I realized the order of the pixels matter. EVEN THOUGH you state it in the video. I didn't know what it meant until now. Now I must redo my submodels as I just built the frames and about to push the pixels. GREAT INFO and thank you for sharing.

Congrats on making it so far with your custom window props! The good thing about the software programming in xlights is that it can be redone, if needed. So, no harm no foul. Thanks for the comment, and I’m glad you figured out that piece!

Hello Steve, I know this is a old video, but had a question since I am just starting out. I am building my first, power injection box setup. I will be using the Falcon Distro board and 350 watt powersupply. Do I need to connect a ground wire from the Distro 350w power supply to the Show controller 350 watt power supply? Thank you.
@NiFamilyLights
@NiFamilyLights Ай бұрын
@rc240zxt, yes, you should connect the DC grounds of those power supplies. If you don’t, the ground is used as reference for the data signal and if the ground level jumps when power injecting, it could corrupt the data signal.

Steve, I love your channel. I am new to this hobby. Could you please explain how you do your testing. Meaning, are you using xlights? or other system to get the all white and able to set the different output percentages.
@NiFamilyLights
@NiFamilyLights Ай бұрын
@gixster92, thanks for the comment and happy to hear that the channel has been useful for you! For the pixel testing videos, I’m interacting with my computer directly with the pixel controller. In my case, I’ve got the Falcon F16v3 web page up. The Falcon controller is set to drive the number of pixels being tested. Within the interface, you can dynamically adjust the output brightness levels. Most other pixel controllers have this feature as well. When programming pixels for the show, I manually have set my controller to the desired pixel output brightness, which for me is 30%. Back when I started, that setting wasn’t programmable in xlights. Nowadays, you can set that value within the layout tab in xlights then have xlights send the configuration to your controller. Good luck and welcome to the hobby!

You should try this with dual data pixels. From my experience dual data drops signal strength quite a bit. I can push about 400 seed pixels (3 wire / single data) however that number is much lower with dual data seed pixels. It's between 200-244 seeds. The same is true of dual data bullet pixels.
@NiFamilyLights
@NiFamilyLights Ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment and for sharing that dual data seed pixels suffer data integrity issues over long runs compared to normal seed pixels. I wonder if the same goes with dual data regular pixels. If I get my hands on any, I’ll see if my experience is the same as yours.

I have watched all your videos multiple times. Preparing for a new display this year. Going from traditional to pixels. Question is where do you get the pig tails for the boxes I didn't see them on your parts list.
@NiFamilyLights
@NiFamilyLights 2 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment and glad to hear that all the videos have been useful. Regarding your question, the pigtails used in the controller builds were purchased from the vendors where I also ordered my pixels. You should be able to source those female connectors with your specific connector end (Ray Wu, X-Connect, etc) from most any pixel vendor companies. They are typically 14” to 18” long and work great. Best of luck through your transition from tradition lights to pixels!

Our playground in the backyard was destroyed by a tornado. We were so lucky that it missed our house. The playground was secured with rebar, however, the wood was no match for the tornado. Today I was trying to get the rebar up but after 30 mins of me pulling and digging and sweating, it hadn't budged. I knew someone just had to know a better way. Saw your video and had it out in under a min. Thank you so much!

I wish I had come across this before I built my box. Now I have to make some changes. The Falcon Differential Receiver seems very similar to the QuinLED-Dig-Quad, each port/channel can power about 550 LEDs. I am also working on a QuinLED-Dig-Octa that I working on. I like the idea of having a separate power supply for power injections. Will have to check out some more of your videos, GREAT JOB!

Incorporating the vise grip really helped. The rod I was trying to remove was smooth so turning it did nothing. It was an 8ft'er with only about 6 inches sticking out of the ground. Had to vise grip it close to the ground, then use my car jack to lift on the vise grip as close to the rod as possible. Slowly but surely it was removed.

Does the f-amp need to be before or after the power injection wires? I have my esp32 running 16 feet, the next set is where I connected the power injection.
@NiFamilyLights
@NiFamilyLights 4 ай бұрын
I would recommend putting the F-Amp after power injecting. The improved power baseline will allow the the F-Amp to do its best to boost and cleanup the signal as much as possible. If you do it before the power injection point and the voltage has decreased too much, the F-Amp can only do so much to create a solid signal. That said, if the data coming in is already poor, the F-Amp will not be able to remove all the noise. When I chain props with lengths between runs, I recommend power injecting and boosting the signal before a length of run to the next prop. Best of luck.

I bought these supplies and attempted to build these v/Amp meters and did not have success. It would apparently read the voltage, but for some reason the data signal was always dirty and the lights connected to the end of the meter would always flicker. It might still work to read the voltage at the end of a run, but if anyone has an recommendations to a volt meter good for measuring 12v and 5v pixels I'd like to hear it.

I have a spool of 200 Seed (Pebble) Pixels that I tested and worked fine on the spool. I took them off the spool 5 minutes later with the exact same hookup to an ESPixelStick and suddenly they are dead and not lighting? The ESPixelStick gives a blue light so that is powered, and the first pixel use to flash yellow for 1 second when initially powered but now I do not get that flash and doesn'e seem to have any power to the pixels. Any ideas or thoughts as to why this is/how to test it/fix it? I see no visible damage to the lights or cable and these are just 1 month old. Would be shocked if they just randomly met the end of their life by taking them off the spool. Thanks for any help
@NiFamilyLights
@NiFamilyLights 7 ай бұрын
Hi and thanks for writing in. From your description of events, I would think that the lights are completely fine. The connection from the ESPixel stick may not be making a great connection if as you say, the first pixel used to blink. I would re-check your connection from the ESPixel stick to the seed pixels.

The female plugs are the ones with the power, just like your home outlets. The male plugs are the beginning of your lights which are getting the power from the female end. Hopefully that helps you to keep them straight in your mind.

What do you use to run your show? (Pi, xSchedule, etc) do you have a video on that?
@NiFamilyLights
@NiFamilyLights 8 ай бұрын
@gritz1701 Thanks for the question. My setup is pretty straightforward. I use a Pi 3B+ running FPP to run the show. It’s hard wire connected via a network switch on a dedicated show network to the F16v3 and the two P10 panel setups. The P10 panels are each running a Beagle Bone Black with an octoscroller cape, connected to the 36 P10 panels. I don’t have a video on it (yet) as it’s pretty standard, and there are many videos out there showing how to setup and use FPP. Please let me know if you have other questions.

Is the second tree the same numbering starting at 1 or is it 86. Are these strung together
@NiFamilyLights
@NiFamilyLights 8 ай бұрын
From a physical setup, they are all identical. Within xlights, the channel numbering will follow how you have them laid out in the layout tab. If you created one mini tree then copied and pasted the rest, their channel numbers will be consecutive.

In my show, I do chain 6 of them off of a single controller output with power injection after every two mini trees. You can see how I do that in the “How-To - Chain Pixel Props Like a Champ” video.
