After 50+ years, this is still one of the three best recordings of this that I've heard.

Did anyone else notice the articulation of the rising arpeggio motif in the first movement? The upbeat is a staccato, where as in other scores there is no expressed articulation on the upbeat. However, Alfred Brendel plays this little motif as if there is no staccato on the upbeat.

This brings back the memory of hearing him play this live, 28 years ago ... his style is so distinctive ... and the way he brings out the last movement is so unique ... it is as great as anything Beethoven wrote, but is so easy to play too fast and just turn into clanging cadences. In some ways, one hears that last movement's ideas recur in portions of Opus 57, Beethoven's better known F minor sonata.

How do these two sonatas share the same ideas? I had never noticed it.

I sought a performer who did not rush the last movement. This became more and more interesting. Brendel has a reasonable tempo and gives the last movement more character and drama than those who rush through. It is NOT a question of difficulty or virtuoserie, you need to be able to hear the tones in order to get the musical changes.

nice easy production without too much exaggeration. About right for speed and expression.

11:08 Ok I don't know why, but I'm in love with this menuetto. There is a quite interesting thing in the notes. So dramatic and so romantic... It's telling you something, like a story. But this story is not so happy. My favorite movement of the sonata.

Thank you so much for posting this video. I remember watching the recording with Glenn Gould in the early 80ties and it is so fulfilling ❤

Thanks for your comment! I’m planning to upload bach’s goldberg variations as my next video. Of course I’ll be getting on with B’s sonatas. Just figuring out which performers I should choose.

@@mallard8277 For the Beethoven Sonatas I know Brendel is good. I’m not to sure about Bach though. I do like Bach. But mostly I listen to the Brandenburg concertos, and the Concertos for Violin. I haven’t paid much attention to the Goldberg Variations though. But I look forward!!

@@alecsachs9082 I know I’m going to include Brendel on mostly all future Beethoven videos but trying to slip in another performer. For Bach, you should expect Gould and more!
