Sally is the daughter of James Taylor and Carly Simon. James and Carley are two of the most talented and legendary singers in U.S. musical history. James and Sally together, they sound like magic. Magic we need today and every day.

Considering it's primarily a live performance, it was recorded in 1999... I mean... I really seriously take my hat off to the band, the sound engineers and James himself. this is exceptionally crystal clear live sound.

And as always - right after I type a comment I immediately think of another one - I’ll do admire James for taking on a challenge that is totally outside his wheelhouse (Shakespeare and classic choral?). I’ll bet this required a lot of vocal practice! I will admit that I was riveted just appreciating his true vocal talent (apart from what we normally hear in his own songs). 😊 Colin - have you managed to find any interviews with James in 1992 about this? What prompted his to take this on, and did he ever sing any of these pieces in concert that year?
@colinkavanagh1603
@colinkavanagh1603 2 ай бұрын
I didn't find any Specific interviews searching for the songs. It seems he was a long time friend of Stan's and had worked with him on a few albums and Stan just asked him did he want to do the Shakespeare songs.

I agree with you about “life on the inside” - it is haunting. If I understand correctly, Sam Silverman wrote it and James “Taylorized it” with his guitar picking?

That song actually came from a musical written by Stan Silverman called Doctor Selavy's Magic Theatre which was released in the early seventies. (nothing to do with JT) JT recorded the track as a bonus song along with the other 5 Shakespeare somgs in !993

Okay - from an interview with Stanley Silverman: You’ve worked with people like Sting and James Taylor. Is there one memory from a time with any one of the people you’ve worked with that sticks out for you as a moment you would return to if you could? James Taylor, in 1992, flew up to Canada and recorded six of my Shakespeare songs for a fundraiser for the Stratford Festival. I remember after the session sitting down, taking him out, he's a teetotaler, to dinner. And I was sitting with a Bloody Mary, and I said that Voltaire said, "Give me six great nights in life. That's all I ask for, six great nights." I said, "James, this is one of my six great days." I mean, to hear that voice do Shakespeare was just riveting.

when i heard of the existence of these tracks it was great to find and post them but they are really are an "aquired taste". i do love the more mainsteam track "Life on the Inside" though it has a haunting, hypnotic quality about it.
