Do you have to use a different chain if you swap out the 16T front sprocket for the 17T ?

My chain was already worn so I replaced it with a medium-priced option, which worked great. As I recall (it's been 10 years now), it had a few more links, which I don't think was necessary since the new chain never stretched in the remaining years I had the bike. Cheers.

I strongly recommend using a torque wrench when tightening up the sprockets. It's 55 Nm rear, 10 Nm front. Blue loctite isn't a bad idea either. If you're willing to do this work, it's not the last time you're going to need a torque wrench / metric socket set. It's also 23 Nm for the brake bolt and 104 Nm for the axle nut. I had a clutch holder which helped as well to prevent things from moving when tightening them up. And like another commenter said, make sure to lubricate the master link.

Are the front sprocket bolts supposed to spin freely once tightened? I hope I didn't strip the threads on my new sprocket.

That's not supposed to happen. Good luck.

After u get the shifter off, how do u get the odd star shaped connection to pull off? There's the screw holding it tight but even when loosening it I can't seem to pull the last piece of shifter off to open up access to the front sprocket? Same bike 00 xv250

I'm not near the bike right now, so I only have the video for reference. By the star-shaped connection do you mean the part just foreward of the spring @ 1:04? If so, after loosening the screw it slid right off. WD40, maybe?
@stevenrichmond2024
@stevenrichmond2024 8 жыл бұрын
svaz2006 ill try wd40. seemed like it was catching on something. watching the vid on my phone at 1:04,1:05 its at tge very bottom and somewhat u shaped.just under the bottom of the center plastic cover pretty much below the pause /play button. its the back end of the shifter and looks to b dangling downwards at time frames id'd.

svaz2006 at the time discussed at the location referred to, its got a bolt that acts as a clamp. I've taken that bolt completely out but as I slide the very back of the shifter (U shaped) at the connection to tranny, it comes halfway off then gets stuck... ill WD it tomorrow n see if that helps. jic ill try and take a still shot of the video abd circle the part im having trouble with. or just video myself getting stuck at the same place. either way that'll give everyone more info as to my problem. prob ain't looking passed my nose to see the solution. im. sure its simple and im making it an issue when it shouldn't b. TY for your time and help!

I have done this similar upgrade.(38t rear sprock.standard 16t front) Its like having an extra gear on top end .Always felt like it was over revving on the original set up but now much better,faster cruising speed without revving the nuts off the engine . I highly recommend this upgrade .

Just had the chain and front and rear cogs changed on my 2009 VStar 250. When I picked it up, the bike "sounded" different. Also, the foot pedals were now right up on top of the brake and clutch! I can hardly get my foot in between to shift. Is this something that could have been caused by the tech while changing the chain? I'm not very pleased at the moment and will take it back ASAP to have them fix what they did.

@adamn7516 9 жыл бұрын
Cathy Koschik I suspect they adjusted your brake and shifter so their technician could test drive the bike after install. You will have to bring it back to them so they can readjust the brake and shifter back to your desired position. Not sure what you mean by sounded different. New sprockets and/chain may make it a bit quieter. Also did you replace the sprockets with the same size or did you do what this guy did. If you went to different sized sprockets than the engine will rev lower and thus sound different (smoother and quieter)
@cathykoschik9252

Adam N I think the sprocket was the same size as the original. It has a higher pitched sound than before that is not from the engine. In fact, I never noticed a non- engine sound at all before. This is definitely something new. I'm taking it back this weekend, hoping they treat me with respect and don't take advantage since I'm a novice and a female. You have no idea how frustrating it can be.
@adamn7516
@adamn7516 9 жыл бұрын
Cathy Koschik it's quite possible it could be from an improperly adjusted chain or improperly lubed chain. It could even simply be a poor quality chain or even poor quality sprockets. Would interested to hear what they tell u.

Sorry - the lift is presently burried under a ton of stuff, but IIRC, it is a no-name generic my wife picked up for me at a garage sale. The lift is too wide to fit under the bike frame and it doesn't adjust either. Usually, I use some wood scraps (sometimes a plywood sheet, sometimes 2x4) to make it work. I use a rachet strap to secure it, though that is sometime haphazard as well.

why would i have a slip in the rear sprocket on my vstar 250 (not the chain the hub), is it normal or is there something wrong
@svaz2006
@svaz2006 10 жыл бұрын
A "slip in the rear sprocket" isn't terribly descriptive, but it definitely does not sound good! Depending on what you mean, you might have some damage to the sprocket itself (maybe the bolt holes have stretched oblong), or you might need to tighten the axle nut, or (on the other side) your brake torque rod is loose. I would reference pg. 7-36 in your owner's manual for adjustment specs. Be sure to get that fixed before you ride it again. Keep the shiny side up!

What do you think with 17/43 set up? Do you think stock chain will fit?
@svaz2006
@svaz2006 10 жыл бұрын
I never did change to 43T - dropping to 4th until I get to the desired speed then shifting back has been good enough. Likewise, I do not know if the stock chain will fit, but the 112 I used was about mid-way in the adjustment range and hasn't had to changed since I first put it on!

I know it might have been a long time ago but ive been trying to do some research for my 02 Virago 250 for a 17/40 ratio you don't happen to remember the part numbers do ya? If not its no big deal.

I had found a link to a French website, I think, with the .pdf. Sadly, I've lost both the link and the .pdf file. You might be able to find the shop manual if you Google something like: "xv250 maintenance manual filetype:pdf" - good luck.

I just wanted to point that out for future knowledge. & also I made the change to 17 up front & 45 in rear & im much happier with it now. I have a video of my bike at jobos98 on youtube, check it out. & good luck with the chain.

the little packet that you thought was a moisture grabber, was actually white grease, & you should have used it to lube the X rings & the pins on the master link before you put it together. now you will have a premature failure of the master link on the chain from over heating & oxidation, & a lack of lube. in the joint..

Sorry I couldn't get back to you sooner. @ 3:10 I think I id the chain as 112-link and it has a bunch of slack. On the bright side, however, I've not had to adjust the chain once since putting it on (that OEM chain suuuuuuuuuucks).

Well, I did it. I love the change. My chain was too long so I wasn't able to do it overnight like you because I don't have a chain cutter. The dealer did it for me. The only thing is that my rear tire is all the way back. Thanks.

El7Cantante7, glad to help. I bought my kit at the local Yama dealership. As for the performance - those little tomato can sized pistons are working overtime to haul me around. Still, I can count on the bike to do 55 MPH under worst conditions (in 4th) and hum along happily @ 75MPH (in 5th) under ideal conditions. Tususpop, in 4th, no, in 5th, yes. HTH.

svaz2006, where did you buy your kit? I'm definitely encouraged to do the swap myself by seeing your video. I guess if I get the same kit I should be alright. Also, I see that your video is 6 months old... any updates regarding the performance of the bike? Thanks again.

Oh, forgot about the back sprocket. You can change the torque/range trade-off be changing the front/rear sprocket combo. After some months' research I found that 17/40 was the recommended place to start. Since I'm a bit on un-light side (210#/95kg) I may change the sprocket again to 42 or 43 to give me a bit more torque in 4/5.
@svaz2006
@svaz2006 12 жыл бұрын
In the first part of the video I changed the front sprocket from 16 tooth to 17 tooth (17T). The change trades torque for a broader speed range per gear. Assuming you have this model bike, you know that you have to switch into second almost immediately after you start moving and 5th just screams at highway speeds. The 17T configuration makes 1-4 more useable for in-town riding and 4-5 more useable for relaxed cruising. The trade off is that you can barely accelerate in 5th. HTH.

@scooterboyelite I can't say with any certainty. My 250 can hit 75 - I've had it to 82 - but that's with the wind and probably a slight incline; of course, I'm pretty heavy (210#). I'm guessing that with just the 17, you can get awful close (provided you are fairly light). If you swap out the back too, you'll probably fall below the hp peek and not be able to get there. YMMV. Good luck.

Doing the very same work on the very same bike! Thanks very much for the visual. I'll be adding a larger rear tire (140/90/15) while I have the wheel off. The torque ratio for the drive and driven spockets would be much appreciated if you have them as they were not mentioned in the video. Now, if you would do a video on removing the smog crap under the left side cover below the tank I would be very happy!!
