I've got several sets of the same pliers. Only the grips on the reins are different. They run $13-$15 at the local hardware stores. They cut barbed wire and other thick fencing wire amazingly well. I can't recommend them enough.

This is just one take and not how id do it really. I do all my work with the drag. Dont hold the spool youll snap the line with bigger fish unless youve got 100lbs mono and even then sometimes. Tighten drag till it slows down on a bug turn and then back it off just a hair. Then reel until they run and stop. Then repeat. You can get goliaths, skip jack, drum/grouper complex species, sail fish, whatever.

Palming the spool is horrible advice. The reel should be set to the proper weight so that the line doesn't break but can lift the fish.

Cupping the spool is situational, usually only when a fish is heading for cover where they'll break you off or they're running hard and you're about to be out of line. Other than that, maybe a really big fish (or wide body like jacks and tuna) that you're trying to get to the surface when they're near the boat and the fight is basically over.

Your attempt at cutting the hook was not in the cutting part of the pliers

Buddy of mine caught a swimbait to the bottom lip trying to boat flip a fish in the boat. He pushed it through himself and i cut the hook. He fished the rest of the day with me too. That pop was brutal being pushed through

Cut the hook on the shank it doesn't change much just maybe a Lil more pain but you already have a giant ass hook in your thumb so pain doesn't really matter. And why were you using so little pliers for big game fish I always have some cuda angled pliers on board that can cut through some heavy gadgets wire.

You dont cut the barb end off, you cut the other side, just as close to the skin as you can, then grab the barb with pliers and pull it out. What a shmuck

I always keep a pair of flush cuts on me. Even though I've never been hooked. Circle hook life. Don't even have to set the hook. Even with a set hook I dont try to yank the fishes face off like some people do.

If you're trying to winching the fish in, you're an American bass fisherman of you've never really caught a fish that actually pulls hard, I fish ricer mostly in South Africa and let me tell you, you have to know how to play those fish, they pull HARD, and put their heads down in the current
