It’s true that you tend to stay in one position on a 5-string . . . but not, like he says, at the lower end. It’s because we only rarely need notes below E. More likely, we stay in one position around the middle, so we can play over two octaves from E ( on the B string) as our lowest note. Different story, of course, if you have EADGC tuning. Then, you will tend to stay at the low end of the neck.

Fretless 6 with a minimum of 18mm string spacing at the bridge. Forces good left hand technique
@mrtezzhimself6 күн бұрын
I should check the specs on my 6. Love how mine feels but it was a gift to me and I’ve just played it and never got it touched because of how well setup it was.
@byMRTNjournals6 күн бұрын
@mrtezzhimself string spacing isn't something you can usually change and it's quite rare to find 6s with wide spacing. I have an 18mm spaced fretless and a 16.5mm spaced fretted. The difference is huge. The wider bass stops the thumb from popping over the edge and keeps the fingers straight.

4-string all day. There’s a discipline a 4 forces you to have. People tend to overplay on 5s and up….

I totally get this line of thinking. I’m not trying to be lazy the neck just feels too big. And the greats had a 4 string. So if it’s good for them, it’s good for me.

@@mrtezzhimself played a lot of basses today - one thing I found is that there's a narrow range where a 5 string has enough string space to not be clumsy/let me play slap and not be so wide as to strain my wrist(I played a 7 string guitar for years and had to get rid of it). Also, I like flat ibanez necks on 4 strings(for certain styles) but big wide flat necks i cant' wrap my hand around properly, much like with guitar. the wider it is, the thicker i find it needs to be. curious if anyone else finds this. i can see why stingray and jazz bass 5ers are so popular for that reason. the Sire Z series is ideal for this, it feels a bit too big in 4, but has the perfect string spacing in 5. Still not sure which I'll go for!
@shmu_el13 күн бұрын
The correct answer is: you should play a six string bass.

This might come off bit lengthy but I'd like to share something. I am what I would consider guitarist-turned-bassist even though I started from a bass. Started doing bass again when I got ushered to play in a 3 piece instrument rock band, and started, as usual, playing on 4. Even though I love the simplicity on minimal strings, I just can't help the fact that having one bass and one guitar playing loud music just doesn't seem to cut it (or maybe it's just that I am not that good lol anyway nvm), so I turned my 4 strings with B setups. I even DMed Kelsey from The Free Nationals through instagram seeing that he does that, and according to him he's just comfortable having low B on a smaller neck, and if he needs to whip higher notes he'll play around higher frets. Anyway, again, could be me who might not feel as easy to just run my hands so I figured, hell, get a 5. Played on it for few years now ever since, and I had lesser issue having to use thicker strings and setups. Anyhow, my point being, I guess, use what suits you the most, and what serves the song best. Doesn't mean you can't do heavy RnB on a 4 strings but would definitely doesn't hurt to use a 5.

How long does it take for you to learn a song on bass?
@mrtezzhimself19 күн бұрын
Great question. Depends on the song. I’ve spent anywhere from 5 mins to days or possibly weeks learning anything from a simple pop tune to a jazz solo transcription. Also, learning to read or chart helps with this.
