The film is full of weaknesses in terms of story and direction. The guy is exposed to them full time and they fail to shoot him. Clint Eastwood on the poster, with the name of the movie omitted, prompts us to watch it, only to be disappointed, and this makes it third or even fourth class among Western films. However, the picture is great for a movie dated 1951

Boetticher and Murphys careers were in a slump, as the modern directors were gaining traction. Westerns were also changing, and giving way to newer cop and action films. This film was the first of an intended crop of Murphy produced films, and it is a bit confusing as to where it wants to go, and what it wants to be. Being bogged down in litigation delayed its release, and Murphy died in a plane crash 2 years later.
