Could you talk about your winter clothes and shoes for those of us unequipped ☺ what you choose and why, and where - appreciate it!
@sarahguest52326 күн бұрын
In terms of clothing I'm not too picky. Good winter gear can be VERY expensive and I find that if I layer-up like crazy, I stay good and toasty. Many times when I go out for a full day, I'll be wearing at least three shirts under my sweat shirt, and three pants. This is all under my winter denim onesie. When it comes to winter warmth, the two areas that I will drop money on are my hands and feet!!! I've mentioned in videos before that my traditional moose hide/beaver fur gauntlets are the ONLY mitt that keep my finger tips warm. We are very fortunate where we live because it's relatively easy to find people who still make traditional/hand made mitts and hats from the land. They are pricy (mine cost over $400.00), but they are WELL worth it!!! I wear skinny gloves underneath. And as for boots, our kids are in the Baffin brand. They're expensive, but they are a nice heavy and warm boot! Dressing warm makes ALL the difference when you want to enjoy a winter day outside 😊.

I forgot to ask you do you have deer on the island or bears? Do they have to walk across the ice to get to you I know it's about a mile long. 😊
@sarahguest52326 күн бұрын
The only wildlife we have on the island is birds, squirrels, weasels, martens, otters, spruce grouse, rabbits, mice, and shrews. In the winter there has been a lone-wolf spotted a time or two around our island, but large wildlife is pretty much nonexistent for us. This makes it really nice as a mother with children playing in the bush. I never have to worry 😊.

Just bought second SunJoe (12.5ton hydraulic) which splits gigantic rounds with little effort, using just the smallest natural split in the rounds. My one complaint is I'll never understand why the oil access hole is so bloody TINY!..I've searched far & wide & cannot find a funnel with a stem small enough to access the hole. First 10 ton one was $100 on sale - maybe 8 years ago....This 12.5 ton was about $140-150?...Great machine if not for the NIGHTMARE of adding oil....If anyone at SunJoe reads these reviews - FIX THIS PROBLEM!!! - or tell me WHERE I can buy an appropriately-sized funnel for the oil....
@sarahguest523223 күн бұрын
We love ours too! Jon said he uses just a regular ATF bottle with those skinny nozzles. He said that he has to run a stream because if a person completely covers the hole, it can't breathe and will bloop back out. He said he spills a bit but it's the best he can do. Would be nice if the hole was a bit bigger for sure!!

This isn't a compost toilet correct?. Most people off grid have compost toilets was that ever a possibility?
@Mntguy-nr9vl25 күн бұрын
It's definitely not a compost toilet because that incinerates things and they go bye
@sarahguest523225 күн бұрын
During my research I found a few problems with the composting toilets. 1. A few people mentioned running into odor issues. 2. You need brown matter to cover after each use. 3. My family of six would be using it faaaar too often for it to have time to compost. With our available space and usage needs, this one was a much better choice I think. 🤔
@sarahguest523224 күн бұрын
I looked into those kinds as well. In order to keep up to our family, they'd go through like a 25lbs bottle of propane a week (if I remember correctly). It would be very expensive to run. The one we have was just the original investment, so it seemed like the best bet 😊!

Thank you for answering my question because you told me the name of your lake so I looked around and everything is so small. Normally people that want to live off grid come from large places and get fed up with the crime and all of what being in a populated area brings. Like myself I lived in a small town that became a city after 50 years. Now it's riddled with crime,drugs, asylum seekers and a lot of poverty. I think in the context there's a difference between being alone and lonely I would love to live on the shores of that lake but I would feel alone on that island without children and a family. It's funny how we're all different. I'm glad it works for you and I'm glad it makes your heart happy. I had mentioned that you read the future, because I did a little clip of the northern lights in my last video. They are the most beautiful in the fall time it seems. Or maybe that's just because I'm seeing them with it getting dark earlier haha. I can relate to you with social anxiety for sure. Usually city trips end up in headaches and tummy aches for me 😞. What is polar day and polar night? I did a quick google search and is it the sun staying up for 24hrs a day during summer season?? We get pretty close to 24hours. Around the summer solstice, the sun sets around 11pm and you can see it slightly peeking out again around 3am 😊. I miss it already!!!! The lack of sunlight has been making me a lazy bum these last few weeks!! Take care! Have a great week coming up!
@Mntguy-nr9vl2 ай бұрын
Polar day and polar night is for people that live in proximity to The Arctic circle. While you are not in the Arctic circle the closer you get to the Arctic circle The more you experience this phenomenon. In summer you have polar day where it is sunlight 24 hours a day at the North Pole so as you mentioned it gets dark at 11:00 I am at a lower latitude than you I get dark at 9:00. In the winter the opposite happens which is polar night where there is a vlogger who lives on Svalbard at the North Pole and they have darkness for months, For me the darkest the sun sets is 4:00 in the afternoon. You're about 700 mi from the Arctic circle which sounds like a lot but every hundred miles closer you get to it you experience the polar day in polar night a little bit more than say someone like me who is thousands of miles from the Arctic circle.

Hey Mom you're right being out in nature it's more soothing that's what it is it's less pressure in some ways in the city there's more pressure you have to be more social in some respects. No I have some problems in the last few years in the last 25 I have spent most of my Summers in Southeastern Alaska my cousin had a quarter section nothing Northern British Columbia beautiful place I like the ocean better personally that's just me but I can't take the winner on California boy I just can't take the Gloom during winter that's my problem. And personally the best much anyway Where You Are and where I like to be are usually from the end of August till the snow falls because there's almost no bugs. And that's one of my things that I have trouble with is mosquitoes and black flies doesn't even matter if I spray myself down they love me I guess it's the amount of CO2 I put out but holy moly. I'm 58 our first time going to Northern British Columbia was when I was 18 and I still have under my arms scars from the mosquito bites. But I learned on that and so if I go into mosquito or black fly territory I do spray myself down and then if I do get that I use 99% alcohol on the wound and it dries the wound out immediately and barely have any scratch on a scratch barely. But I love where you are and I think it's a great thing for your kids too. Has your kids and I think all kids need to know where food comes from that sometimes you have to kill animals to eat them to get bigger and I think that's important and more responsibility have a good one

We aren't quite north enough to get the full effect of polar sun but we definitely get a taste of it!! June 21st is the longest day of the year for us. The sun won't fully set to darkness until around 11pm, and you can start the see the faint light of the sunrise around 3am. I love our summer sun!! It makes it so much easier to wake up and enjoy fuuuull days. On the contrary however... is winter.... most ppl head to work in pitch black, and when they are off work at 5, it's pitch black within the hour. It makes a person want to hibernate!!! For your second question, I have a snippet of the Aurora Borealis in my next video already! Weird that you brought it up! I haven't captured it for you guys before because my phone does not have a great camera on it unfortunately... the pictures don't turn out so great. But people can get an idea next week anyway!
