Lucas really should have listened more to the people around him.

Glad this guy didn’t work on Jedi. Han Solo dying is an awful idea!
@gordongecko197529 күн бұрын
@@edwardelric603 It is unknown who came up with the idea to kill off Han Solo. We know for sure that Harrison Ford suggested to George Lucas to kill off Han Solo to give his character more gravitas. And even Lawrence Kasdan (Co-Screen Writer ESB & ROTJ) mentioned in the official 'Empire of Dreams' documentary, that someone should die early in the third act, to strengthen the story dramaturgy hence the audience shall start to worry about the remaining characters.

R.I.P James Earl Jones, David Prowse, Carrie Fisher, Alec Guinness, Peter Cushing, Gary Kurtz, and George Carlin I miss James Earl Jones, David Prowse, Carrie Fisher, Alec Guinness, Peter Cushing, Gary Kurtz, and George Carlin so much and The Force will always be with James Earl Jones, David Prowse, Carrie Fisher, Alec Guinness, Peter Cushing, Gary Kurtz, and George Carlin. James Earl Jones along with David Prowse both did a great job with the villainous role of Darth Vader, Darth Vader will always be my absolute favorite Star Wars villain, and Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia as well as Alec Guinness as Ben Kenobi and Peter Cushing as Grand Moff Tarkin are all brilliant characters in Star Wars. I also really love both Gary Kurtz and George Carlin. Gary Kurtz was a great producer for American Graffiti and Star Wars 1977, I love Star Wars 1977 as my all time favorite Star Wars film, and Star Wars 1977 along with A Clockwork Orange, The Godfather, and American Graffiti are my top 4 favorite 70's films. George Carlin was the best American comedian with stellar common sense, Back in Town and You Are All Diseased from 1996 to 1999 are both George Carlin's greatest comedy routines, and George Carlin's take on Free-Floating Hostility and Religion were both absolute gold.

Killing Han off in RotJ would probably have been a bad move, since the whole first half of the film is about rescuing him, it would make all that a waste of time.

The special edition Death Star attack in Episode IV was the least intrusive change and if you watch them back to back I'm sure you'll see noticeable changes to get shots that couldn't be had with the models for the 1977 version.

The 2004 versions were much better and were released with the theatrical versions so it’s really not a big deal
@gordongecko19752 ай бұрын
The 2004 iteration of the Special Edition got a strangely magenta-heavy color-grading and crushed blacks missing a lot of detail in the darker scenes. The light sabers suffered the most from the 2004 color-grading. In ESB and ROTJ Vaders lightsaber glows pink -- it should be red --- and the white cores are almost completely missing. Just watch the ROTJ scene when Luke & Vader are crossing blades in front of the Emperor. The Theatrical Versions on DVD (released as a so called 'bonus disc' in 2006) were a huge disappointment. Lucasfilm simply a dumped 13 years old (at that time) Laserdisc transfer on a DVD in a non-anamorphic widescreen format. Fans rightfully complained about the poor transfer. George Lucas himself quoted that criticism in May of 2024 during an interview Q&A in Cannes where he recieved the Honorary Palme d’or at that time. He basically said: 'We released the Theatrical Versions on Laserdisc and everyone complained it looks terrible. Yeah, i know it looks terrible and that's why i created the Special Editions.' He perverted the criticism of the fans to justify his Special Editions. But the fans did not complained about the movies ... they simply complained about the poor quality of the transfer Lucasfilm pulled out of the closet.

George needed a producer like Kurtz who would straight up tell him which of his ideas were good or bad. The fact that he went with a total “Yes” man, Rick McCollum, for the prequels is why they weren’t quite as good.

While killing Han in Jedi would’ve been emotionally impactful, I’ve never been sold on the idea/beat’s longevity or overall service to the story. And as Gary says, the film wouldve become a more bittersweet conclusion to this rousing three part serial/Saturday morning matinee, rather than a heroic winning of the day. I reckon it would’ve been a really hard moment for the film to recover from. Of course, as Gary also explains, if that was the film which was made we’d have known nothing different…

I do remember reading that Lucas offered the directing job (for RoTJ) to Kirshner but he turned it down. Later he said that after watching the movie he regretted turning it down. Marquand was probably a more amenable director to Lucas ideas, he still made a great movie, but it's interesting to think what it might have been like with Kirshner in the directors seat.
@gordongecko19757 ай бұрын
Another reason why Kershner turned down directing ROTJ was that you have to commit three years of your life doing a Star Wars movie from developing the script, pre-production, principal photography, post production and so on. He did not want to go through that a second time.

@gordongecko19758 ай бұрын
