I think that it’s true to say that both of these musical officinado’s were in fact paying homage to “Django Reinhardt “. And I think that “Julian Bream” is a classical guitarist, that we should hear more of.?!!!

In Julian’s book ‘A life on the Road’, he relates the experience of playing at this concert. It’s an hilarious story. He wasn’t too impressed by Stephane’s approach to the duet!

The meritocracy of these 2 individuals in their respected fields of classical gypsy guitarist & classical jazz violinist are of the highest regards in their class. To hear and watch them perform together is a rare moment in the excellence of all art! I thoroughly enjoyed this fine gem!

In the hot club Stephane had to be the sensible one while Django launched into improvisations, often with some dissonance thrown in.Tough act. Here Stephane has the lead,Julian holds his own commendably, especially for a classical player. Check his expression watching Stephane lay it out,you bastard!

My late dad was an excellent guitarist & met the famous Segovia , have a foto of a palm tree signed by Segovia , on the back :- good but needs to practise more . Dad taught me how to play a wooden ukulele , easier for a lefthander , have in my house in Spain a genuine Russian Balalaika , bought from a scrapman € 20 .

It's sad the tradition of improvisation has disappeared over time in the classical world to the point where it seems almost antithetical. I knew a pianist in high school who was technically brilliant and said he couldn't improvise for the life of him but could play Chopin excellently. There's a certain irony in that.
