Goddamn this single-handedly makes me want to watch FMA again. That scene where Roy loses his eyesight gave me straight chills. God I love this show, the dub was also equally as good as the sub. FMA and FMAB forever.

My headcanon is that Al sees Hughes as more of his father figure than Roy, but Ed sees Roy as his father figure because he knows him better because Ed is the only one actually in the military, and would've spent more time with him. Roy understands Ed way better than Hughes does. He's literally the one who 'lit the flame'(haha cus he's the flame alchemist) in Ed's eyes. He's the one who helps find leads for Ed and Al, he rushed to help Ed in first scar incident and the 5th lab.

I find that comment about "seeing Hell" from Maes as being indicative of his own feelings regarding his roles as a father and a soldier. He'll wear the colors, but asking his daughter to enlist or even supporting her aspirations for joining? She'd never get past registration if he had any influence. He knows for all the good that people like him and Roy do, there is an upper echelon that needs to be held accountable. That upper echelon isn't facing the Scar's or Shou Tucker's of the world. They're comfortable in their offices and showing up AFTER the bodies are counted to make the appearance of being a present CO. Maes has had the misfortune of being one of the frontliners when the corpses were fresh and it felt like you were wading through Hell. To him, the military doesn't enlist people to give them opportunities. It enlists lambs to be slaughtered and sorts out the remainders. He doesn't abhor Roy's decision given the alternative. He just resents the nature of the uniform and wouldn't want anyone else to have to wear it, least of all his own child.
