I've seen Morceli's Rieti time from 1992 (the previous world record) listed as both 3:28.86 AND 3:28.82 Why is that?

Great as Cram in the late seventies Ovett would have swept past him on the last bend like he was standing still

Coe is not sufficiently far ahead of the others to have clocked 3:47 - it doesnt tie in with the times / distances behind him
@markjones1953 ай бұрын
He seems to have run quite wide in the lane plus at an uneven pace. Plus a solo run. Likely would have been first man under 3:50 given modern pacing and running tighter to the rail.

Conservative won the election in the year that Coe first broke the world record and they didn't lose an election until the same year that Coe lost his world record.

Incredible that the record has not even been improved by a second yet. That would be like the marathon only improving by 52 seconds, yet it's several minutes.

Walker intended to run the legs off Ovett but only managed to run the legs off himself! Ovett didn’t panic when Walker bombed ahead…he knew he was a faster finisher than the great New Zealander and timed his attack to perfection. Ovett was an amazing racer and master tactician.

When you see what was run the other day in Eugene (2024) I think people have no perspective. The Ovett/Coe era was over 40 years ago , so you'd expect this progression. Also, without the world records of yesteryear you would not have the WR's of today.

Both Ovett and Coe thought if they just followed Cram, they'd out kick him in the last 200. He was amazing for those few years.

I saw Keino a couple of times at the White City in London during those years. He used to run wearing a baseball cap and we all knew when he was getting ready for his kick because he'd throw it off into the crowd on the back straight!!!

Firstly ovett said he over raced in 1981,secondly there was times when ovett wanted to race Coe ,but Coe at the time didn’t want ovett in the race,thirdly ovett raced the man on the day more than fast times,if they had raceed each other the world record would have come down to 3 28 ,but Coe said at the time he didn’t want ovett in the race because ovett would sit in and try and outkick him,ovett best times for 1500 was 1977 to 1981,in 1981 he ran into church railings and I feel this blunted his acceleration .HE did manage to break the 1500 world record in 1983 3 30 .77 and he did beat cram in London road mile in 1985 ,his last majo victory was the commenwealth 5k in 1986 .

He's the greatest who's ever lived and probably the greatest we'll ever see. No-one can compete with his records, no-one. If he'd had fewer illnesses and injuries and been selected for the 1988 Olympics, who knows what he would have achieved!

One of the truly great track performances. You can see with your own eyes how poor the track was, and for Coe to have run that time being alone from 300 metres out was incredible. Along with other multiple world record breakers, Steve Ovett and Steve Cram, it was an amazing period of dominance for British middle distance runners.

Overtt is the runner who, in a big 1500m race, leads the last 300, raises his fist and starts celebrating w 80 to go, competitor comes abreast, startled , O speeds up, gets 1/2 step, celebrates again w raised fist, gets passed at line Ego Humiliation That defeat by 0 teaches us.
