I was in Crete last year 2020 and looked for the allied monument. After a long search I found it on the roof of a concrete ruin. WHAT was this building going to be? I was also very sad about the current state of the allied monument.

@netlogboy To the time of the battle for crete the greek army was totally destroyed, only 5000 more or less greek soldiers stood on crete + crete partisans who killed wounded paratroopers from behind with their knifes. Respect for the greek soldiers they were good soldiers but they alone were no danger for operation merkur.

@netlogboy Ofcourse these creeks were very handy with a knife but you wrote their hold of an entire german air raid... that is just greek propaganda. It were mainly the british royal army and (most of) the troops of the commonwealth who fought bravely and honorfull against the germans and i respect these soldiers and their skills. Without the british and the new zealanders it would not come to such a bloody battle for crete.

German forces attacked greece on april 6. 1941 and on april 29. 1941 the last greek resistence was defeated by the germans on the greek mainland. on may 20. 1941 the german forces attacked crete(mainly defended by british and commonwealth forces), the battle of crete ended on june 1. 1941with a german victory and the retreat of the allied forces from crete. greek army got pwnd really, really hard.... By the way: The first breakthrough by the Metaxas line already succeeded after three days
