This would be really good if we were having children. And 8 years ago it just may have been reality. Today however, we are very well below replacement rate in the developed world. Maybe this becomes reality due to Africa. Highly unlikely though.

In the meantime we will have to consume less, specially in more affluent societies. Economic growth will have to come to a halt basically. Fossil fuels will decrease and renewable sources won't be a match!

Dr. Rosling strangely didn't anticipate or discussed possiblity of decrease in number of children in the continents of America and Europe. He talked about decrease in Asia and compensated with increase in Africa. (Probably because he thought migrants to continents of America and Europe will ensure no decrease in number of babies born). After almoat 15 years of this lecture its quite striking. Now we have dramatic decrease in number of children in not just Asia but also in America and Europe. Hence we are not going to 11 billion. We will peak somewhere around 9 to 9.5 billion around the years - 2045-50. Or probably earlier at less than 9 billion, with effects of pollution and food standards+food habits further pushing down fertility rates other than bigger reasons like social and economic pressures.

Was he one of the best, most important and underrated speakers in our era? Sure enough. R.I.P. prof.Hans Rosling.

This man was making some big assumptions back there in 2015. He is discounting some inevitable possibilities like the birth rate collapse due to economic conditions, discounting dysfunctional governments, discounting war and pandemics. If none of these things occur then likely will continue to the 11 billion mark. Except it won't. We are already seeing collapse of the monetary system and world economies. The governments are not far behind that. In 2020 the world got a taste of what a world wide pandemic can do. So, nope.
