When I am watching an english video non-stop while reading english subtitles, Am I doing extensive reading and listening at the same time?
@morksensei
@morksensei 2 күн бұрын
Interesting question! If the level of English is relatively easy for you (and it should be, for any extensive reading or listening!), then having subtitles (assuming they are correct and well-synched) will probably make listening easier for you if you want to improve your listening, or reading easier for you if you want to improve your reading. There is nothing wrong with this approach, but I would suggest that you focus on ONE. If you want to improve your listening, ideally you don't want to have to read subtitles to understand, right? If you cannot understand without the subtitles, then the level of listening might be a little too difficult to be called "extensive" listening. Does this make sense?

Please answer from your learning experience. I got a new Spanish book and I can’t read it. How do you read a totally new book. Do you get anybody to read it for you. Or you get it with audio sounds thank you

If you cannot read it, then it is not extensive reading. Extensive reading requires that you already understand 95% (some experts say 98%). I would suggest you find something easier. If you are an absolute beginner, you will probably have to learn first at the sentence level (not a book, but perhaps a children's book might be possible) Reading with audio will help you make connections with oral speech and writing, but it will not help you with meaning.

Hi there! Sorry for the long wait. "Carrying backpacks" means that they are holding them in their hands. However, in the picture, they are WEARING backpacks (on their backs).

I saw a lot of cases where all three forms have been used. Coercive power caused a lot of corruption in my society. Persuasive form tore us up, it's very dangerous, especially in the hands of religious characters. Manipulation is without a doubt the worst form since the masses believe anything the media spreads.

Here is how to paraphrase Kepler's 2nd law - "A line from a sun to a planet swings out equal areas, at equal times.": Kepler said that an imaginary line, with foci being the "sun" and the "planet" does this -- it accelerates towards the objects as it gets nearer and nearer to these objects, with the acceleration maximized as it goes around these, and then, it decelerates in speed as it goes away from the objects. That's a long paraphrase, but this works. And to be careful, I quoted "sun" and "planet" to make sure that my paraphrase did not become a "close paraphrase', which can be plagiarizing. However, if you do a research assignment that only focuses on physics or classical mechanics, you don't need to cite that above fact - most physicists know that law already.
@morksensei
@morksensei Ай бұрын
That is true! When someone says something that you cannot say better or simpler, it is a good idea to quote. Most of the time, however, paraphrasing is preferred, especially if you want to shorten, summarize, or simplify. However, in all cases, you need to cite, UNLESS it is common knowledge. And yes, what is common knowledge for one group of people might be different for others.
@charlessmith263
@charlessmith263 4 ай бұрын
So here is common knowledge - "Emmett Till was killed unjustifiably in Money, MS." That is a well-known fact. It is known by both a lot of Blacks who are not scholars, and those who are Black history scholars as well. You don't need to cite that. But, "X author said that Emmett Till was going to intend to whistle at a second White woman, and was going to do that before the mob grabbed him and lynched Till, even up to axing part of his face several times, even knocking out one of his eyes." - - - That's not common knowledge. You must cite that because this statement is only known by expert Black history scholars and historians, and not a lot of other people. Otherwise, you are plagiarizing.
@morksensei
@morksensei 2 күн бұрын
Cheers for the comment! The reality is that "common knowledge" depends on the writer's background (particularly cultural) and your audience. At the end of the day, it is safer to cite if you are not sure. Or simply ask your prof. or an authority in your field.
@charlessmith263
@charlessmith263 4 ай бұрын
And when paraphrasing a source---if you just change only a few words in the original source in your taking of notes instead of using the paraphrase in your own words in the notes--you face the booby trap of plagiarism that will be set, and when the professor catches you doing that, the booby trap explodes on you, and you get punished accordingly. You could be also be expelled from the institution depending on how bad the plagiarism is! Paraphrasing right while taking notes, therefore, is extremely important to avoid plagiarism accusations.

Thank you for your help. I am a student of political science and international relations at university in Turkey. I’m a Kurdish woman, I have two languages. These languages are Kurdish ( that is my mother language - it is very important for history of world ) and the other is Turkish. English will be my third language. This year is first for my department. And I’m feeling very very lucky for found your page- account address. 🧡

Hi, teacher! Hi, Cathrine! I would like to express my opinion concerning language exchange. I do not hear about it very often. It is not difficult to find a language exchange partner with a low level of your native language, but it is much more difficult to find a partner with a more advanced level. When your level of English is advanced, you want to talk with people speaking at a more advanced level of your language. It is much more interesting for you.
@morksensei
@morksensei 7 ай бұрын
Yes, I recall you mentioning this before. With language exchange, you won't find an ideal partner the first time, in all likelihood. Sometimes you end up at very different levels, but it can sill be worthwhile. Do half of the time in one language, and then switch, even if one half is not highly communicative. There are a lot of polyglots who claim the got their excellent skills by communicating with MANY different language partners online. It is ideal if you are a people person who enjoys a wide variety of personality types and backgrounds.
