This scene stuck with me. I was born in 1996, but this movie was a huge part of my childhood. The build up, the intense music as atreyu aproaches the spynx. Bold for a childrens movie at the time..yet greatly executed.

Great scene. This is what modern movies fail to capture - tension and impending danger. The Sphinx were intimidating without doing a thing

I saw the original movie of The Neverending Story in third grade, and to this day, it's one of my favorite movies. 👍 In my opinion, this was the most intriguing scene of the movie. It teaches a lesson about confidence. Whether or not the Sphinxes could see "straight into your heart" as Engywook warned, it was a dangerous test to walk between them. The test wasn't just about Atreyu being confident and calmly walking through to pass the test. When Atreyu first approached the Sphinxes, he looked scared, and when he saw the dead knight and his charred face, he was terrified. In order to pass, had to quickly change from being terrified, to be confident, run and JUMP out of the way at the right time. Look at Atreyu's face when Bastian yells "RUN NOW!" and you will see the determination and confidence in his face. This movie has helped me in life to not doubt myself, and be more confident. 🙂

It was not about being confident...The sphynxes didn't want ANYONE to pass and won't let anyone through their gate. Their eyes open everytime someone tries to walk through their gate, they are like a perfect machine. The They would open their eyes whenever they realized an intruder was there and the fact that they did shoot rays from their eyes, too, means they tried to kill Atreyu in exactly the same way they had killed the knight. Atreyu managed to survive because he jumped, being very athletic, so he avoided contact with the beams of light. Beyond the initial allegory (being or not being self confident) I think the sphynxes cannot see into hearts. It was a lie the old small man told to Atreyu. The sphynxes are killer guardians every time they see someone even trying to pass the gate, so only those who can run fast and jump away from their light beams make it through their gate.

Interesting analasis. Although, since this part to my memory wasnt part of the book I guess they tried just as in the book to create added value. One shouldnt forget that psychiatrists and behavioral scientists still tributes Ende for his psychological allegory throught the story - that the Sphinxes can... see into the essence of beings trying to pass by them. The allegory becomes that the person that want to be in a position to knowledge or change has to believe in him/her self. Otherwise those not convinced will cut the person at the knees. That is how the reality works i think. The act is blended very elegantly I think with the self fulfilling prophecy which is very important here; the character on the hilltop and the reader are afraid and still bound to the main character and believes it cant be done. Thereby Atreyo also fails - the neverending story that the empress cite later on in the story. In the end it was a failure from Atreyo´s part. The reason he survived I believe was that the Auryn took the blow, just that they couldnt shoot it in a good way. I recall very well from the book that the Childlike empress respected all beings in her [king]dom and thereby all beings bounded to her rule gave Atreyo free way wherever he went. Even the evil and relentless entities; even helping him. I believe that its the reason he isnt drowning in the swamps of sadness that took the horse in a heartbeat of hesitation. Ive spent more or less all my life to analyse the different parts of the movie and hope am kind of right.

Where did the knight come from and why was he trying to get to the southern oracle? Also he appeared out of nowhere and we don’t see him riding to the sphinx gate when they reach to the telescope.
