Why doesn't the teacher allow you to use a shoulder rest, and how did he/she explain it? If you can't hold the violin without a shoulder rest, it might suggest that, for some reason, they didn’t show you the proper technique, right? Holding the violin without a shoulder rest is certainly possible, often with the help of a sponge, pad, or anti-slip mat, etc. However, it can be much more difficult without a shoulder rest, which is why I'm not against using one, as it makes the process easier.
