One thing I'm not clear on still, is at what level FEC works in a networking environmen t. In DVB, satellite and terrestrial broadcast, and also CD's and DVD's, the loss is at a byte level, so a byte level FEC does wonders. But for a network transmission, where we're talking about something like 1316 byte blocks, is FEC done treating each block like it were a byte? The overhead for doing the maths must be enormous effectively handling something like ten thousand bit numbers (1316*8). Or if I'm wrong, and network transmission FEC IS being done still at the byte level, I can't see how it works at all. Most of the loss seen on UDP broadcasting is a complete loss of a packet, never a packet corruption, and sometimes a packet order problem (which is trivial to fix). In such a case the burst length of a byte-based FEC would have to at least be 1316 bytes.

The implication at 34.50 ish is that FEC is only able to fix one error per column. Is this true? I'm no maths expert, but when I was working on CD's and CD error correction, we could fix one error in the row, then up to 4 errors in the columns. The maths got increasingly harder for each error. I even played with the idea of correcting more than 4, by going back and redoing C1 on a partly corrected block...

Thanks for sharing. at 24:30 you talk about the FEC failing to correct 5 blocks that are too many to handle. Wouldn't the fact that you have too many blocks to fix at this point invalidate this entire frame of 10x10 blocks from any FEC correction? It's all or nothing surely? At this point, assuming you are using this hybrid, your ARQ would have to resend all the purple and light purple blocks.
