This channel is a goldmine! Thanks for all the wonderful footage. I’m just barely old enough to remember the tail end of locomotives running with Southern livery & the dawn of the NS thoroughbred scheme, so a lot of this footage really takes me back to some of my earliest memories with my folks & grandparents indulging my boyhood train obsession (which would eventually become a grown man’s train obsession, lol).

Assorted GE U-boats, old EMD Geeps, a myriad of mongrels (6 pack) engines from the Norfolk, Santa Fe comprised the Guilford fleet, the 6 packs were forbidden to operate on any Amtrak lines. Used to work the engine house, repair parts came from canibulized, disabled, locomotives near the fuel pit and most of the active engines were constantly tagged out of service by the FRA in surprise inspections

TOTALLY COOL VIDEO; I live on State Hwy. 304, just south of “cactus corner”, and worked for TXGN in the 90’s. We interchanged cars with the 84 local out of San Antonio, at the old Harwood yard.

There is something about the narrator’s tone & cadence, along with the stark absence of background music, that gives this video a haunting (almost unsettling) quality that really draws me in. Plus, who doesn’t love to see some quality SP action from back in the day?

Their firebox vs fmw was totally flawed. Fmw was way better constructed
@chooch1764Ай бұрын
@pennsylvaniarailroad1223 There was actually more work at Steamtown than you think. Much of tender work was done there. As well as making a new smokebox and backhead of the boiler. They are still be able to be used. One of the mistakes I learned about was using structural rivets rather than boiler rivets, but they are in the process of being addressed.

@@chooch1764 but they go 2.5 mil from the state that's just enough to complete any steam restoration project
@chooch1764Ай бұрын
@@pennsylvaniarailroad1223 First of all, it was actually $1 million dollars from the state. Again, some stuff was done incorrectly. The previous management is not involved anymore. The new management is doing the restoration alot better and has a qualified contractor to do the work. Let’s move on from that and get excited about this locomotive.

My father worked for the Erie Lackawanna Railroad for 45 years. He had a Pass, and we rode the trains for free. Sometimes, on Sundays in the late 1950s, my dad would drive us to the Hoboken Passenger Terminal, and we took the local to Suffern, N.Y., leaving on Track 16. We rode in the old green Lackawanna Stillwell cars with the thatched seats. The ride was exhilarating, and we could open the window. At Suffern, we strolled around the station and the ballpark, stopped for lunch, and took the train back to Hoboken. The train stopped in the yard before entering the station to release the front engine to the maintenance shop, and another engine hooked up behind us and pushed our train into the station. Before leaving the platform and entering the waiting room, we walked first to see the locomotive. It was always a black with yellow grab bars, Alco RS (road switcher) with Erie painted in yellow letters on the sides. This was before the merger of the Erie and Lackawanna railroads in 1960 when I was seven years old. I remember my dad telling us about the merger in our home. And looking at that Diesel close-up made our Sunday! thanks 🧑🎤 🏁 👩💼👩🎓👩⚖️

Between the sea of Conrail blue, 8 diesel lashups with DPUs/helper units, cabooses (cabeese?), and the absolute multitude of SD40- and GP40-type locomotives, this is a historic video that feels so nostalgic.

Back before: Ditch lights were required on road engines, or any train exceeding 20mph. Stenciling on the wheel frames were required fuel logs were kept so an accurate amount of spillage could be formulated Track warrants were used, making DTC blocks a relic and making verbal authority a little safer. I remember so much of this stuff from when I hired out and have seen so many changes! Situations like this where the changes were necessary to prevent or minimize a repeat.

I worked for a large grocery company and I did a lot of work with Conrail using them to haul piggy backs from Ohio to near Boston. I got two invitations to ride this train. One was from Boston to Springfield and back and the other was from Hartford Ct. to Stanford Ct. and back. On the first trip I was in the cab of 4021. Had to walk through both engines while we were in route. It was very loud.
