TBH sans' procedure is pretty clever as to get the secret code before anyone has been told means, with non-negligible likelihood, that either time travel or psychic abilities are at play. However, of course, after you've told at least one person the initial word you have to be suspicious of future people saying it. The backup words help, but they suffer from the same issue, and just like with passwords, the more cycles of this you involve the more likely someone will discover one of the passphrases by coincidence and the harder it gets to remember the system. Fortunately, a real time traveler (or at least, the most interesting kind; being able to a causality sequences is what makes time travel cool) would hopefully also be able to go to a point in time after you've come up with the system but before you've actually told anyone the word. I think it's best to make a note of the time at which you first tell anyone the code, and not accept it from anyone after that (but tell all travelers what this point in time was) In Frisk's case, apparently sans didn't think it was necessary to do anything more than the backup codes, perhaps this was the first time telling anyone so even jumping back 15 seconds would have been sufficient.
